Fix it and Forget it Cookbook Revised & Updated

by Phyllis Pellman Good

I love using my slow cooker, especially during the summer, so the kitchen does not heat up so much. Plus slow cooker meals are easy to fix, just put the ingredients in and hours later dinner is ready.  This is helpful when the kids have evening activities, since it makes the dinner rush less hectic.  One of my favorite slow cooker cookbooks is the Fix it and Forget it Cookbook.  So I was pleased to learn that a new edition of this classic cookbook was recently released.

There are over 700 great recipes to choose all from home cooks, and the newest edition has over 100 new recipes.  The variety of recipes is amazing.  Sometimes when I haven’t planned ahead I’ll just decide I’m making a beef roast, and then just flip through the beef section until I find a recipe I have the ingredients for.  Most of the recipes use simple, everyday ingredients, without a lot of fancy preparation.

One feature the new edition has that my old one didn’t is that is includes the “Ideal Slow-Cooker Size” for each recipe.  Adding this was a great idea.  In the past I’ve tried to cook recipes designed for 4 quart slow cookers in my 6 quart slow cooker, and it just doesn’t work as well since the cooker is not full enough.  Now I’ll know when I select my recipes which ones will work best.  The new edition also has lots of helpful slow cooker tips, including tips for year round use.  The only thing I didn’t like about the cookbook compared to my old one is the binding.  My old edition had a spiral binding, so it laid flat on the counter.  But overall I’m enjoying using this new edition of one of my favorite cookbooks.  Here is a picture of the Tuscan Beef Stew recipe I made last week.  I liked this recipe because it had lots of beans and carrots, with just enough meat to add flavor.
