Treasures from the Attic: The Extraordinary Story of Anne Frank’s Family

By Mirjam Pressler

Translated by Damion Searls

This book is the story of the family of Anne Frank, as documented by family photographs and letters.  After Helene Elias, who was Anne Frank’s aunt died, her son discovered in her house a collection of photos, letters, drawings, poems, and postcards preserved for decades.  These documents form the basis of this book, which tells the story of the Frank family both before and after World War II.

The letters and documents are used to create a chronological narrative, which starts with Alice Frank, Anne Frank’s grandmother who was raised in Germany.  The background of the family is very interesting, and I had no idea the family was so well off.  The book provides a fascinating look at the prejudice against Jews that existed throughout Europe, and how it got worse with the rise of the Nazis.  The Frank family realized that Nazis were going to make it difficult for them, and in the 1930s the close knit family split up, and immigrated to various countries, including  France, Switzerland and Holland.

The low point in the book is, of course, after the War as the family tries to find out what happened to each other and reconnect.  The part of the family that was safe in Switzerland didn’t even know for sure what had happened to Anne Frank’s branch, they just knew that all contact had stopped.  There are letters from Otto Frank to his family both before and after he discovers his wife and children have died in a concentration camp, and they are heart wrenching.  This is definitely the best part of the book, and it conveys the confusion and despair that so many families went through at this time.  The remainder of the book talks about the publication of the diary and the lives of the Franks who survived the war.  The book is an interesting read, and add a lot of backstory to the story of Anne Frank.

Last year while visiting Washington D.C. we visited the Holocaust Museum. I told my daughters they should read the Diary of Anne Frank, so they could appreciate how a girl their age was effected by the Holocaust. This book would be interesting for them as well as myself to learn more about the Frank family.
