There are many ways to go green and reduce energy consumption, and one of the best is hanging out clothes to dry in the sunshine. It just seems silly to spend money and waste energy running a dryer when the sunshine is free and, at least this time of year, abundant. To help me “go green” I recently received the Household Essentials P1900 6-Line Portable Indoor/Outdoor Umbrella Clothesline from Hayneedle to review, and I love it.
When I started looking at clotheslines I had a hard time deciding which kind to get. We have a large backyard, which has very little shade, but by the time you get past the garage, dog’s area, garden and pool you are about 30 yards from the house. While I could put a huge clothesline out there, I know I probably wouldn’t use it much if it was that far away. Plus we rarely run more than 2 loads of wash a day, so I don’t need a huge clothesline. So I decided the best thing to do was to look at portable umbrella clotheslines, and get one I could put on the deck. Our deck is only a few feet from the laundry room, so it is convenient to have a clothesline there.
This umbrella clothesline is very portable, since it folds up. When the box came I couldn’t believe how small it was! Here it is, both folded up, and fully extended.
It is easy to put up and take down. I like the fact that if we are having company over I can just fold it up and put it away. During the winter I can either store it, or use it inside occasionally.
The design is vey versatile. The bottom has a pointy end which can extend below the rest of the clothesline. This allows you to anchor it in the grass if you are using it in the yard. If you are using it on the deck, like I am, you can raise this up so it sits flat on the deck. The tripod on the bottom extends to 52 inches, which makes it pretty stable. I did fold it up and bring it in the house last week when we had high winds and a thunderstorm, just in case. It folds up so quickly though, so it is no big deal to bring it in.
I can easily put an entire load of laundry on the clothesline. Here it is with a load of kitchen towels hanging out to dry. There is 64 feet of drying space, and as you can see there is plenty of room left for more laundry. The only drawback I have found to the clothesline is that I actually have to remember to bring the laundry in before it starts sprinkling!
Ever since we moved into this house I have been using my deck railing to hang sheets, blankets and beach towels, and I am thrilled that I can now hang out most of my laundry, which will save energy and money.
Hayneedle has a huge selection of clotheslines, including Clothesline poles, Wall Mount Clotheslines, Umbrella Clotheslines and more. If you are trying to save energy on clothes drying you can definitely find one that will work in your house or yard. If you want a portable one like I received, Hayneedle has generously offered to give one of my readers their own portable umbrella clothesline.
