Breakfast Smoothie Bowl

I find a smoothie bowl more satisfying for breakfast than a smoothie just because it seems more like a meal. A smoothie is great for days I am on the run and want to drink breakfast in the car. But if I am sitting down for breakfast at home using a spoon a breakfast smoothie bowl seems more filling. I also like the extra texture of the bowl with fruit and toppings. A green smoothie bowl is a satisfying breakfast that will leave me full for hours without weighing me down.

How to Make a Smoothie Bowl

Smoothie Bowls are different from a classic smoothie because they are meant to be eaten with a spoon, not sipped through a straw. This means they need to be thicker and creamier. I almost always add banana to my smoothie bowls, because it gives them a thick and rich consistency. Another thing I like to use in smoothie bowls is a whole orange, which I peel and section. If I was making a smoothie for drinking I’d be more likely to use orange juice, because it would be smoother. A high quality blender is essential for blending up a whole orange, like a Vitamix or Blendtec.

Healthy Vegan Green Smoothie Bowl topped with strawberries and granola

For this berry smoothie recipe base I used some pineapple, an orange, half a banana and a cup of spinach. I combine these ingredients with a cup of crushed ice, but I don’t use any other liquid for the smoothie. The juice from the orange is enough to make the smoothie bowl thick but not too thick. Yogurt also helps make a smoothie bowl thick, but I prefer to make mine dairy free and vegan.

Green Smoothie Bowl Toppings

There are all kinds of healthy toppings that you can add to the top of your green smoothie bowl. I topped this recipe off with strawberries and gluten free granola. The berries add extra sweetness to the bowl, and the bright red color of the strawberries against the green spinach base makes the dish look very appealing.
