Football season is in full swing, and my husband and I are enjoying all the action and excitement! We don’t get to many games in person, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a fun Homegate experience while we watch our favorite teams. This past weekend we created a Japanese themed Football party featuring a Japanese Inspired Bloody Mary and Sushi.

Japanese Bloody Mary

This made a great change from our typical pizza and chicken wings, and added some spice to the games! Football might not be a big sport in Japan, but that doesn’t mean we can’t mix the two cultures together. Bloody Mary is a cocktail that has lots of variations, so it just lends itself to experimentation. I didn’t want to spend a lot of time putting together our Homegate, so I used a LiDestri Bloody Mary cocktail as a base.

This is the first Bloody Mary cocktail in the US that includes alcohol, and it comes in either Traditional or Spicy. I picked up some of the Spicy at Walmart, and it is also available at Wegmans. It comes in a convenient recyclable pouch, which makes it perfect for taking along to football games when we can attend in person.

To make it go along with our simple Japanese party theme I added a few things to the cocktail. I poured some lime juice in a glass with ice cubes, and then topped it off with a few ounces of Sake.

Then I used the easy push button pour spout to fill the glass with Bloody Mary Cocktail.

Since celery is traditional for Bloody Mary’s I naturally used a celery stalk to stir it all together. As a final touch I garnished it with some pickled ginger and lime on a bamboo skewer.

A Japanese jar.

The final drink was VERY tasty, and VERY spicy! I loved how spicy it was, and the pickled ginger was perfect for cleansing my palate and cooling my mouth occasionally in between sips. LiDestri really captured spicy Bloody Mary flavor in this cocktail, and it paired well with the sushi.

Starting with a cocktail as a base and not having to add spices myself makes the whole process very simple. The pouches are a great value because they hold the equivalent of 2 750ml bottles, and they are shelf stable for 9 months.

  1. no offense, but this has to be the single least inspired Bloody Mary variation I have ever seen. What makes it Japanese? Pickled ginger and sake? That’s it?

You weren’t even imaginative enough to put wasabi in it? Even though horseradish is one of the most popular Bloody Mary spices?

    Seriously pathetic.
