I love popcorn, my family will tell you that it is my favorite snack! So I will take advantage of any excuse I can find to make and eat popcorn, like making traditional holiday garlands out of popcorn and cranberries.
We love to make these and drape them on the bushes outdoors so that the birds can have some Christmas treats. The tradition of using cranberry and popcorn garlands dates back a long time, as until recently commercial Christmas decorations were rare. Plus they are easy and fun to make.
JOLLY TIME Pop Corn is a family run company that has been handing down the American tradition of popcorn for almost 100 years. This year they teamed up with another long-time family-owned business, Habelman Cranberry, to pass along this holiday tradition.
My daughter and I had a blast making popcorn garlands to decorate our bushes. This is a very easy craft, all you need is a needle, thread, popped popcorn and cranberries. We discovered it is best not to work with too long a string, since if you use a long string it tends to get all tangled up. So we used about 3 feet of string for each garland, and then tied them together to create long strings.
JOLLY TIME also sent me a cute plastic mold for making popcorn balls, which theoretically should let you make the balls without getting your hands all gooey. We found we still needed to squish them with our hands or they fell apart, but it was lots of fun anyway! I will be posting our popcorn ball recipe and more pictures later this week.
So this Christmas make some homemade gifts with simple old fashioned things like popcorn! And if you need gift tags for your homemade goodies you can find more popcorn recipes here, and print out some Free Printable JOLLY TIME Mason Jar Labels.
