One of the fun things about baking cookies and cakes is using frosting and decorations to make brightly colored creations. But some of the dyes used in those creations are not very natural at all, but are full of chemical additives. So for those who want to try to use only natural colors in their cooking and baking Nature’s Flavors has developed high quality food colors that are natural, vegan, gluten free and chemical free. I recently had the chance to review their set of natural food colors, and I found they worked well and gave me bright, vibrant colors.
Some people are sensitive to food dyes, and other people just want to eliminate as many chemicals as possible from their diet. But with these food colorings chemical free doesn’t have to mean boring!
The dyes are liquids that came in small 2 oz bottles. The colors I received were Cherry Red, Blue, Honeydew Green, Yellow and Pumpkin. You can mix the colors to create almost any shade in the rainbow. The food coloring is designed to be used in items that will not be baked, since heating could cause color changes in some dyes. But it is perfect for frosting, puddings or non-baked desserts.
My kids and I used them to color icing and decorate cookies and cupcakes. We tried out the red and yellow first, and the colors were bright and vibrant. The red had a nice pink tint, and the yellow was very colorful and cheerful.
The only drawback is that the bottles do have to be refrigerated after opening. This makes sense, since after all some of the chemicals they don’t contain are preservatives! So if you are looking for a natural dye alternative be sure to check out www.NaturesFlavors.com and see the colors you can create.
Disclosure: I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
Huh, that is so interesting to me. I didn’t know there were food dyes like this! My daughter will be happy!
I love that website! The food dyes are gluten free, which made me very happy. I really loved looking at the various products the company offers.
What a great alternative. I don’t remember the last time I used food coloring in general, but this is a nice option.
Oh I LOVE these! I will definitely be looking into them!
I had no idea that these were available. We have been trying to avoid many of the food dyes – but it is very difficult. I will definitely be ordering these before making my next batch of cookies.
I was going to dye some snack the other day and thought…I don’t really want to do that with just regular stuff. I love that they make these and will have to go find them! Thanks!
I’ve actually been looking for natural food coloring! I need to pick these up. Thanks!
I have these too – love them! 🙂
I’m looking for a natural dye that is vibrant red, not pink. Any suggestions?
