Recently my teenage daughter needed a present for a friend’s birthday, but unfortunately, like most teens, she is broke. So when she realized that we could make a Peppermint Sugar Scrub with ingredients we had in the house, she was all in on the idea. Not having to go out an buy things to make this makes this perfect for a last minute DIY gift.

This homemade sugar scrub is green and white striped, like a candy cane, which makes it an appropriate gift  for Christmas, but it is also not so overwhelmingly holiday themed that that it would be out of place at a summer birthday party. I included two sets of printable labels below, one of which is Christmas themed and one which is not, so you can give this DIY gift any time of the year.

Sugar Scrub Benefits

Sugar scrubs are amazing for using on your body or feet for silky smooth skin.  The sugar exfoliates and the coconut oil moisturizes the skin for the perfect combination. Since a sugar scrub is quick and relatively inexpensive to make it makes an excellent gift, whether for the holiday or another special occasion. It is quick, simple and soothing, especially during the stressful holidays and cold winter months – a great way to enjoy a spa day at home without a lot of effort! The minty smell of the scrub is soothing and relaxing.

How to Make a Sugar Scrub with coconut oil

The simple sugar scrub is made with only a few simple ingredients – sugar, coconut oil, food coloring and peppermint essential oil. You can also use peppermint extract instead of the peppermint essentail oil. We used food coloring to make half of the sugar scrub green so we could make the scrub layered like a peppermint. While this is not necessary the peppermint stripes do make the jars look much cuter, so it is worth the small amount of extra time and effort it takes.

The first step in making the DIY sugar scrub is to melt the coconut oil until it is liquid, which takes only about 15-20 seconds in the microwave. Then we mix in sugar, peppermint oil and food coloring. The ratio of sugar to oil is not crucial in this recipe, after all you aren’t baking it! So if you like your sugar scrub a little bit coarser add more sugar, and if you like it more oily add less sugar. I like my scrub to be on the moist side, so that is that is what my recipe makes.

Once the simple sugar scrub is made it is time to make it look festive. I love using mason jars for gifts, because they look rustic and a pint sized jar is the right size for this scrub. We layered the two colors of peppermint sugar scrub alternately into a jar, ending up with 3 layers of each color.

To make it even more decorative we used baker’s twine to tie a few peppermint candies onto the jar.  My daughter printed out a label and the gift was ready to go!

So if you know someone who needs a little bit of extra relaxation this scrub is a great last minute gift that is sure to appreciated and will encourage them to give themselves a little bit of pampering!

Peppermint Sugar Scrub Recipe

  1. Microwave the coconut oil so that it is liquid. This should take only 20 seconds or so.
  2. Pour the coconut oil into two bowls, putting about half in each bowl. The amounts in the two bowls should be about equal, but it is not crucial that they be measured exactly.
  3. To each bowl, add 1 cup of sugar and few drops of peppermint essential oil (or 1/2 t of peppermint extract.)
  4. Add green food coloring to one of the bowls.
  5. Stir both bowls until the ingredients are well mixed.
  6. Layer the colors in the mason jar until you reach the top, making the layers about 1/2 an inch each. Don’t worry about making the layers even, doing it by eye is sufficient.
  7. Use the twine to tie two peppermint candies around the top.
  8. Add a lid and label the jar.
