Do you have bunch of old electronic devices laying around the house? I know I do, including old cell phones, the camera I dropped in the ocean last summer, and an old VCR that hasn’t worked in years. In the past getting rid of these things has been difficult. Many of them are not supposed to be thrown in the garbage, and contain recyclable parts. Now Best Buy is making it easy for consumers, because every Best Buy location in Puerto Rico and the U.S. is offering free electronics recycling.
No matter how old it is or where you bought it, if you bring it to Best Buy they will take it and dispose of it safely and properly! This is such a great way to help the environment. Technology is the fastest growing waste stream on the planet, so providing an easy way to encourage recycling is critical. Best Buy recycles 387 pounds of electronics each minute their stores are open, so lots of people are taking advantage of this recycling option.
I decided it was time to get rid of the old TV we had sitting in the basement. This was a tube TV that was at least 15 years old, and although it still works we weren’t doing anything with it. So my husband and I loaded it in the car, and wow, it was heavy! I had forgotten how bulky TVs used to be before flat screens came out.
I was driving right by the Best Buy anyway, so I didn’t even have to make a special trip. Once I got to Best Buy I stopped right by the door, and a helpful employee came out and unloaded the TV for me. There was no way I was carrying it into the store by myself! He loaded it onto a cart and took it away to be recycled. So now my basement is cleaner, and I know the TV was dealt with properly. It was quick and easy!

that’s really awesome – we have a number of things I need to recycle!
Such a neat program. I have a few things I could recycle myself!
This is a great reminder! I always see the bins when I walk into Best Buy. Next time I’m headed there I’m going to be sure to bring whatever devices we have that can be recycled.
And there was no fee? When we lived in Virginia and wanted to recycle our old electronics there was a fee – it was nominal but still. That’s great.
I love this program.
Thoughtful article! Unless the manufacturers come forward and contribute towards the recycling system, the recyclers will suffer financially and other waste parts.
