Monthly cellphone bills can be so expensive! With three teenagers who all want to have lots of minutes and texts it gets very costly to manage. Some experts say that the average American spends more on their monthly cellphone bill than they do on groceries or health insurance! Well my family's cell phone bill isn't that bad, but that is partly because we don't have unlimited anything or the latest smartphones.
To help combat the high cost Republic Wireless has come up with a revolutionary plan, that lets you get a smartphone for only $19 a month, or about 60 cents a day. For that price you'd probably expect not many features, but that actually includes unlimited talking, texting and data, and with no contract.
The plan uses the $199 Motorola DEFY™ XT Smartphone. This phone is an Android based phone that has great features, like a front-facing VGA Webcam, rear-facing camera with zoom, and of course you can download any of the 450,000 Apps through the Google Play store. It is dustproof, water and scratch resistant and it comes with a Gorilla glass display, so it should be able to stand up to some hard use.
To deliver so much at such a low price the phone uses Hybrid Wi-Fi Calling. This allows it to use the Sprint 3G network along with Wi-Fi for calls, texts and data. Sounds like a great way to minimize costs.
This would make a great first smart phone for a teen. My 17 year old has been complaining because on her bare bones cellphone plan she has only 200 texts a month and no data. She says that now that she is starting college classes she needs a phone that can download apps, has at least some data, and has unlimited texting. According to her, lack of texts is severely limiting her social life! And honestly this plan is only a few dollars more than her currently plan, with a much nicer phone. So we are going to check out this plan, because if you are in the market for an affordable smartphone it doesn't get any cheaper than this.
