I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting (#MC) for Scratch Wireless. I received a product sample to facilitate my review.
Last month my 14 year old son Robert had the chance to try out a new wireless service from Scratch Wireless. This service makes data and voice services free when there is access to Wi-Fi, and texting is always free. So for someone like my son who is almost always around Wi-Fi it makes having a smart phone truly affordable.
After using the service for a month we are thrilled! We found that my son rarely is away from Wi-Fi. The only times he is not around Wi-Fi are times he shouldn’t be using his phone anyway, like when he is at church or at our homeschool co-op. But for rare occasion that can arise Scratch does make service available, and you can get either calls or data for a monthly fee of $15 or pay-as-you-go access to calls or data for $1.99 per day.Robert received voice and data for a month, and he used only 14 MB of data (out of 200 MB available) and no voice minutes. I am pretty sure he used that data checking Facebook while riding in the car, hardly a necessary thing! He always texts his friends, so he finds voice completely unnecessary. Since he has had the phone the only person who has called him is me, and he’d just as soon I text him as call.
Scratch Wireless runs on a Motorola Photon Q Android device, and it has everything my son needs from a smart phone. It has a slide out keyboard, which makes texting easy. He likes to use the apps, like Facebook and Car Buzz, and of course he uses it to take pictures and selfies!
For my son Scratch Wireless is a perfect way for him to have a smart phone without me having to worry about monthly bills. And it would be great for lots of other people too. After all with free Wi-Fi so widely available why pay for service you don’t need? I am definitely considering getting this for my 17 year old when she goes away to college next year, because she wants unlimited texting!
Each month, Scratch Wireless gives away a Motorola Photon Q Android device through its ‘Fan of the Month’ contest. Enter to win on the Scratch Wireless Facebook page.
