Looking for Sofas?

My husband and I don’t spend a lot of money on furniture.  Most of what we have we have gotten used, from friends, classified ads or garage sales.  There are only 2 expensive, new pieces of furniture we have bought in the last 10 years – a piano and leather couches for our basement family room.  Once we decided to actually buy new furniture for the family room we spent months searching and visiting furniture stores.  We knew what we picked would need to last for years, so we were very picky.  There are so many different types of sofas, from recliner sofas to a versatile sectional that it is difficult to narrow down the options.

One of our local furniture stores was going out of business, so we headed their to check out their stock.  Of course furniture stores are always “going out of business” and it is a standard marketing gimmick for them.  In this case the store wasn’t really closing, but it was consolidating from three stores down to one.  We were able to find a nice leather sofa and loveseat at a pretty good price.  We decided our kids were old enough to trust with something nicer than the basic fabric sofa we had previously had.  It has worked out well, we went with brown leather and it still looks great despite a year and a half of heavy usage from the kids.   It is always nice to feel like you got your money’s worth when you make a major purchase.

Our Annoying Cat Soda

I have blogged about our dog Dodger a number of times, but not much about our cat.  Our cat is named Soda, and frankly he is not a very friendly cat.

Soda the cat lounges aroundHe is pretty mean tempered and never seems to have forgiven us for getting Dodger.  The dog is scared of him, and there is no doubt which pet is the boss in the house.  We were away for a few days ago last week, and while we kenneled the dog we left the cat at home and arranged to have someone feed him.  Soda took the opportunity to show us how displeased he was at being left alone – by using our living room recliner as a scratching post.

the damage the cat did to our reclinerHe didn’t just scratch it a little, he ripped the fabric apart and got all the way down to bare wood.  He also threw up all over the living room carpet, but I suppose that wasn’t deliberate.  So we need to look for new seating.  Our room is not big enough for home theater seating, so we are considering another recliner.  Coaster recliners are very reasonably priced, I was surprised to find out that you can buy some very nice looking ones for under $300.  That is certainly an attractive, low price.  But I really like the look of a microfiber recliner chair, and it would match nicely with out couch.  But whatever we do we will be keeping the old recliner, at least as long as we have the cat.  We don’t want him to pick a new piece of furniture to scratch up after all.

Window Shopping for Bedroom Furniture

After my last post on adding style to my bedroom I have been spending some time window shopping for new furniture.  I know, there are way more important things I should be doing, like weeding my front flower beds and washing the dishes.  But it is fun to look around, and it is much easier to do it on the computer from the comfort of my (not very stylish) living room.

I have been checking out the items offered at South Shore furniture.  They have a lot of good looking styles, and the I like the fact most of their furniture is simple with nice clean lines.  The prices seem very reasonable too.   I like the Back Bay nightstand and the Back Bay dresser.

They are nice, modern looking pieces that are very sleek.  My only concern is the black color, it looks great in the pictures, but it seems like it would show the dust easily.  And fingerprints could be a problem too if the finish is shiny.  I guess I will keep looking, since I probably am not a good enough housekeeper for black furniture.

Stylish Bedrooms

I will admit that I clearly don’t have a stylish bedroom.  My bedroom, like most of my house, is furnished with older, mismatched pieces.  My husband and I have a King sized waterbed, which we bought at least 20 years ago, and is starting to look its age.  My dresser is very nice, it is a mahogany dresser from my husband’s grandparents that I refinshed years ago.  My husband’s dresser is also from his grandparents, but it isn’t as nice as mine.  We actually have a matching mahogany dresser for him, but I never refinished it, so it is in my son’s room.  The only other furniture in the bedroom is a couple end tables (which of course don’t match) and an old kitchen chair.  All in all, it is not a bedroom you’d see in any fancy magazine photos.

Lately I have been doing a few simple things which I hope will accomplish my goal of adding style to the bedroom.  Now of course if we were willing to spend money on furniture we could get something like this Joli table and stool set.  But we have chosen to spend any extra money we have on things like our boat and a piano instead.  So I have settled for doing simple things to add small amounts of style.  I bought new curtains, which are an excellent and yet affordable way of making a room look fresh.  I also added vinyl bird decals to the walls, and hung a very nice mirror that was left by the previous owners of our house over the dresser.  All these little changes have helped the room a lot.  My next goal is to get matching bedside tables, and maybe even a more comfortable chair.

Of course one thing that would make sense to do is to refinish the second mahogany dresser for my husband, since they really are gorgeous pieces of furniture.  But I hate refinishing furniture, so that is pretty low on my list of projects.  Actually it isn’t on the list at all, unless I convince one of my teens to do it.  If money was no object we’d redo the master bathroom, and add a whirlpool tub or steam showers.  But instead we will have to settle for being slightly stylish on a low budget.

Bunkbeds or not?

There are so many decisions for my daughter to make as she heads off to college, but one of them is should she and her roommate bunk the beds or not?  She thought she was done with bunkbeds years ago.  When she and her sister moved into separate rooms about 7 years ago we turned her discount bunkbeds into a loft bed which she much preferred.  Bunkbeds are one of those things that seem wonderful and exciting when you are 6, but aren’t nearly as interesting at 18.

But of course dorm rooms have a limited size, and if you bunk the beds you free up a significant amount of floor space.  When we were touring colleges last fall we saw some rooms in which bunking the beds left enough space for a futon or beanbag chairs.  The idea of having some extra seating is pretty appealing.

When I was in college my roommate and I kept our beds separate, but we didn’t have any choice.  We were on the top floor of an old dorm which had dormers, so the ceiling sloped in at the top and bunkbeds were too tall.  We were jealous of the students on the lower floors who had more options.  We solved our space problems by moving off campus as soon as we could.

But for this year my daughter has to live on campus.  I guess the biggest thing to hope for is that she doesn’t end up stuck in a triple, since that would really limit her options and I don’t think they allow a triple bunk in the dorms.  It is too bad college dorm furniture doesn’t include bunkbeds with desks, like this:

I suppose that kind of design wouldn’t allow the kids enough variety in how they arranged the furniture, but it sure would be convenient to have everything all together in such a compact area.   Feel free to comment and let me know if you had bunkbeds in college or not.

Arranging our Living Room

The biggest decorating headache we have at our house is how to arrange our living room furniture and make it so more than one of us at a time can watch TV.  There just isn’t a good place to put a TV, mainly because the room is dominated by a large brick fireplace which takes up one entire wall.  Don’t get me wrong, we like the fireplace, but we have a woodstove in the basement, which is much more efficient when we want to have a fire.  So we have a gorgeous fireplace, but we don’t use it more than once a year and it makes arranging the room difficult every day of the year.

For a while we actually put the TV on the fireplace hearth, in front of the fireplace opening.  I though this was fine, it was centered in the room and made it easier to see. But it annoyed my husband, so we have moved the TV off to the side and are searching for a  flat screen TV stand.  Here is what we are currently using as a TV stand, an old end table my husband has had for at least 25 years.

The old ugly tv stand in our living room

Some people might call it vintage, but I just think it is dated and worn.  We thought about wall mounts, but again, there really isn’t a good place in the room to mount it.  There isn’t enough room over the mantle, and it would be too high anyway.  So It looks like the best option is a swivel TV stand.  This would let us leave the TV in the corner, but angle it as needed for optimal viewing.  Or we could just move the TV back to the hearth, which would be a cheaper option.  So what do you think, is using a fireplace hearth as TV stand strange or not?
