Tips for Recycling

I want to thank Repreve for sponsoring this post and inspiring me to #TurnitGreen.

Recycling is important, but sometimes it is easy to let it go, because you are in a hurry.  Here are some tips that have helped my family get better at recycling and make it a part of our lives.

Tip #1 : Make it Easy
The biggest reason for not recycling seems to be that it takes effort. We found that if we were upstairs in the kitchen where the big recycle bin is it was easy to recycle, but in our downstairs office everything just ended up in the trash.  So last year we bought a bunch of containers, labeled them and put them throughout the house.

Recycle Bins Throughout the House

My oldest daughter took this on as her mission, and printed out recycling labels, laminated them, and attached them to containers.  Now we have containers all around the house, and there is no excuse for not using one.

Tip #2: Assign Responsibility

For my family having jobs assigned on a regular basis makes them more likely to get done.  So it is one of my son’s jobs to collect all the recycling, put it in a big bin and take it out every week.

Taking out the recycling

Making recycling a normal part of the everyday routine means that it is more likely to happen.  The materials we recycle are turned into things that we use every day.  Paper is recycled and used in all kinds of products, from books to greeting cards.  Plastic bottles can even be turned into clothing!  The green beanie my son is wearing in the picture above is made from Repreve, a fabric made out of plastic bottles that is also found in many jackets.

I am sure every family has tips about how to live a more sustainable and green lifestyle. And if you snap a few pictures or take some videos showing how your family recycles and you can enter to win Repreve’s #TurnitGreen contest!  All you have to do is share an image or video highlighting your family’s efforts, and share it on Twitter, Instagram or Vine with the #TurnItGreen hashtag.

Once you share the image or video with the hashtag, you will be entered into a sweepstakes where five entries will be randomly selected as the Top Five. Those five will be voted on by visitors to Repreve.com where the image or video with the most votes will win a $5,000 cash prize. The other four video entries will receive a REPREVE Jacket and a Go-Pro camera.  Here is a video I made to enter the contest.

Thank you for these tips! My 6.5 year old daughter is my biggest recycling champion. Every time I get ready to throw something away she asks “wait! Is that recyclable mom?”

Great tips! We actually have a recycle box in the lounge upstairs, one in the kitchen and one beside the desk in the office – it’s gotten easier since our city has stopped requiring us to sort all of our recycleables – now we just have one big bin that we can empty our household boxes into! Our biggest tip for recycling though is to decide before hand to buy the least amount of packaging so that we don’t have as much to send to recycling!

There is not a recycling program in our rural county. We try to do our part, though, by buying used furniture and other housewares at thrift stores, antique shops, and yard sales. All the items we have bought for our house would have eventually wound up in the landfill if we had not rescued them. I feel good about the effort we have made.

Making it convenient definitely makes it easier. We have single-stream recycling, so no need for sorting, but every spot in the house that has a trash can has a recycling bin right next to it!
