Wordless Wednesday – Snow Camping in a Quinzee

My son is an avid Boy Scout, and last weekend the Scouts went camping in the snow. They built snow shelters, called quinzees, and slept inside them.

Basically the boys piled up a big mound of snow, let it sit for a few hours, and then dug out the inside for a shelter.  Here is how it looked on the inside.

It doesn’t look very comfortable to me!  I guess my son agreed, since he barely slept at all, but he enjoyed the experience anyway.  Would you sleep in a snow shelter?

  1. Alison says:

I probably wouldn’t sleep in a snow shelter because I would be too scared it would collapse on me lol.

  2. Carolyn G says:

Oay that is nuts! I can’t even imagine being able to sleep a wink in there.

  3. Crystal says:

I’m amazed that he dug out such a great cave! That’s awesome! But I don’t think I’d want to sleep there.

  4. Marianna says:

I am impressed. I don’t even want to walk to my mailbox when there is snow, never mind camp out in it! Brrrrr.

  5. That looks HORRIBLY uncomfortable for sleeping, but I could imagine it would be a fun thing to play in!!

  6. Henrietta says:

That’s awesome! My hubby and the kids used to make forts like this, they never slept in them though!

  7. Rachel says:

Oh wow!! I can only imagine sleeping in there – it probably wasn’t too cold but I bet it was uncomfortable. I am looking forward to building snow forts with my kiddos someday – not sure if we’ll sleep in them, though ;)

  8. Maryann says:

    only if I had to

  16. We used to love to build snow forts when we were kids. I wouldn’t want to have slept in one though!

  17. Jennifer says:

that looks really cool. I dont think I would have been able to get there though since I’d be too afraid it would collapse on me

  18. JulieD says:

Oh my goodness…that looks like it took a lot of work!! So fun though!

  19. I’m always freezing, so I don’t think I could do it but it sure looks like fun.

  20. I want a snow fort! How cool is that? Good job, kiddos, your forts rocked!

  21. Bonnie says:

Boy Scouts tend to do these kind of things. I’m a Girl Scout leader and we’ve never had a desire to sleep outdoors in the winter! I just made reservations for my troop to spend the night in the aquarium in Niagara Falls. Although I might sleep better in an igloo than with a shark staring at me!
