I received a copy of The 3-Day Cleanse by Zoe Sakoutis and Erica Huss to review. Cleansing allows the digestive system to rest so you can rid yourself of the toxins everyone accumulates, whether from unhealthy eating or simply from our environment. This book offers a customized program based on your own personal health and lifestyle.
This books guides readers through step-by-step guidelines for a 1-day, 3-day, and 14-day cleanse, as well as a long-term maintenance plan. Throughout are sidebars, quick tips, secrets and advice from people who have successfully done the cleanse. In addition to the juice, raw, and partially-raw food recipes in the book, the authors include advice on battling the urge to cheat and working the cleanse into a busy lifestyle.
At first I was a little hesitant about this book, because the idea of doing a full cleanse and drinking nothing but juice for 3 days is intimidating. But this book is much more than just information on how to do a detox cleanse. It is a book on healthy living and eating, with the cleanse as one part of that. I like the fact that they emphasize that the cleanse has to be different for each person, and is not a one size fits all program. The authors talk about doing what is right for you and doing what you are comfortable with. So after I finished the book I didn’t feel guilty that I wasn’t going to immediately do a long cleanse; I felt that I had learned a lot and was going to make some healthy changes.
The first few chapters give information on how our environment introduces toxins into our bodies. It talks about how to eat healthy in general, with important strategies like eating organic foods, shopping the perimeter of the store and reducing sweeteners. After that the authors go into detail about the cleanse, and how to prepare and what to expect. I thought these chapters were very detailed, and liked that they talked about both negative and positive side effects. They also continued to emphasize through these chapters that you have to do what feels right for you, and not mindlessly stick to the program. The last part of the book contains recipes, not just for juices, but for salads, soups and entrees too.
After I finished the book I decided to try out some of the juice recipes to see how they tasted. First I tried this one:
1 cup frozen mangos
1 cup frozen strawberries
1 1/2 cups rice milk
This was a hit with my family. It was very thick and cold, like a slushy. It tasted great, and my 17 year old and I liked it the most. My 13 year old said it would be better with added yogurt, but she did drink her entire cup. I am definitely going to make this again, especially since it was so quick and easy.
Next I decided to try the juicer atatchment for my blender, which I’d never used before, and make a juice recipe. I picked this recipe:
3 medium carrots
2 Granny Smith apples
1-2 inch piece of ginger
This juice was surprisingly sweet and tasted strongly of ginger. I thought it was delicious, but it was too gingery for the rest of the family. I’ve never used a juicer to make fresh juice before and I was surprised at how good it tasted. I will be using more recipes from the book, although I’m still not ready to do a full cleanse.
