In this air fryer kielbasa and potatoes dinner the sausage is cooked in the air fryer basket right along with potatoes and other veggies. The sausage and potatoes cook fast thanks to the high heat of the air fryer.

The kielbasa is crisp and the potatoes are tender on the inside. The barbecue sauce keeps the meal from being dry and adds a delicious flavor to all the ingredients.

This is kind of like a sheet pan dinner made in the air fryer. The recipe serves 3-4 and fits well in my large family sized air fryer. However you might need to cut it in half if you have a smaller air fryer.

Ingredients

This recipe is very versatile and it is easy to make substitutions without changing the instructions. I give a list of suggestions variations here. These are the ingredients I used:

  • Kielbasa – This recipe uses pre-cooked kielbasa. Any type of kielbasa will work as long as it is pre-cooked.
  • Potatoes – I used russet potatoes, but red potatoes or yellow potatoes would work well also.
  • Onions
  • Bell Pepper – A red pepper is a little sweeter than a green pepper and provides a nice taste contrast.
  • BBQ sauce – Use your family’s favorite BBQ sauce.
  • Seasoning – salt, pepper and garlic powder

Step by Step Instructions

1. Preparation

Wash and chop the potatoes, onions and red pepper. Chop them into bite sized pieces about 1 inch in size.

cut potatoes, peppers and onions in a bowl

Put the potatoes, onion and pepper pieces into a bowl and spray them with a little bit of cooking spray. Then add the garlic powder, salt and pepper to the bowl and stir everything.

Then add the barbecue sauce to the bowl and stir it to mix everything together.

2. Cook the Vegetables

The vegetables will take a little longer to cook than the kielbasa. So dump the bowl of vegetables into the air fryer basket and spread them out.

Set the air fryer on 400 F and set it for 16 minutes. As it cooks shake the basket once or twice to redistribute everything so the vegetables cook evenly.

While the vegetables are cooking use a serrated knife to slice the kielbasa into round about 1/2 an inch thick.

3. Add the Sausage

When the air fryer finished add the kielbasa to the basket and stir to mix everything together. Then set the air fryer for 400 F and cook for 8 more minutes.

When the air fryer finishes the potatoes should be tender and browned and the kielbasa will be brown around the edges. Put the meal on a platter and drizzle it with more barbecue sauce.

How to Serve

This makes a complete meal by itself, although you can easily add a green salad or some bread if you like.

This summer I have been serving fresh fruit like cantaloupe or strawberries with dinner frequently – it makes a simple, low effort side dish that everyone loves!

Variations and Tips

It is very easy to make some simple substitutions to this meal. Instead of kielbasa you could use a different type of sausage.

Smoked sausage, turkey sausage or vegetarian sausage would all work great in this recipe. Use precooked sausage unless you are planning to modify the recipe to cook the sausage longer.

The types of vegetables can also be varied. You could use sweet potatoes, zucchini or add some broccoli or green beans when you add the sausage.

This is a great recipe for using up whatever vegetables are left in the refrigerator!

Can I Make This Ahead?

This is so quick to make that making it ahead of time isn’t really necessary. But it reheats well in the microwave, although it won’t be as crispy.

You could also reheat it in the air fryer for 10 minutes or in a frying pan. If you do you will probably want to add some extra barbecue sauce before serving it.

If you want to do meal prep ahead of time the best thing to do is to chop everything up ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator. Then dinner preparation will be almost effortless!

You can also vary the types of vegetables. Sweet potatoes or zucchini work well in this dish. A quick cooking green vegetables like green beans or broccoli could be added when you add the sausage.
This recipe fits fine in my large 5.8 quart air fryer. If you have a smaller air fryer you might need to halve the recipe.

  1. Made this for dinner tonight. Flavor was great! The potatoes did not cook enough for my family’s liking. We had to add extra time and still the potatoes were not as tender as we would have liked. I will definitely make this again, but maybe cook the potatoes in the microwave a little before putting in the air fryer. It is possible that my air fryer is not big enough to cook for a family of four.
