They are made from a handful of simple ingredients, so you can make this healthy alternative to fries with little effort. These sweet potato wedges are sure to be a family favorite that you make over and over again.

Key Ingredients

For exact amounts needed see the recipe card below

Sweet Potatoes – Use medium-sized ones. Either orange, white or purple sweet potatoes work fine in this recipe.

Seasoning – For these photos, I used Everything Bagel seasoning. But many other types of seasoning can be substituted. See below for suggestions.

Oil – Use vegetable oil such as extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil.

How to Make

1. Slice Sweet Potatoes into Wedges

Wash the sweet potatoes and peel them if desired. Peeling is entirely optional, and I rarely bother. Then, cut off the pointy ends and slice them in half lengthwise.

Take one half and put it on a cutting board with the flat side down. Cut each half into 3-4 wedges depending on the size of your sweet potato.

2. Season

Use a paper towel or kitchen towel to blot the sweet potato pieces to remove excess moisture. Then put them in a mixing bowl. Drizzle them with the oil and add the spices. Toss the mix everything together, so the wedges are well coated with the oil and seasoning.

3. Air Fry

Put the sweet potato slices in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Overcrowding the basket is the most common reason for wedges that are not crispy! So cook in batches if you need to.

Air fry them at 370 degrees F for about 10 minutes. Pull the basket out halfway through the cooking time and flip the wedges over.

They are done when the edges start to brown, and the fries look a little bit wrinkled.

Recipe Variations

There are many possible spice combinations for these wedges. Here are some suggestions:

  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon paprika, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons chili powder and 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 tablespoon Montreal Steak seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning

Serving Ideas

These are a perfect snack. I sometimes slice a sweet potato up and air fry it for a quick mid-day snack.

They also make excellent appetizers or a side dish with dinner. Serve them with a healthy meal like turkey meatballs, pork loin, or steak kabobs. Sprinkle on a little bit of parmesan or cheddar cheese for a creamy potato side dish.

And of course, they are wonderful served with a variety of dipping sauces. My kids like them with ketchup, ranch dressing, fry sauce, or homemade Chick-fil-A sauce.

How to Store Leftovers

If you have leftovers store them in the refrigerator in an airtight container for 2-3 days. You can reheat them by putting them back in the air fryer at 370 degrees F for about 3 minutes.

Tips for Making the Best Sweet Potato Wedges

Be sure to check out the step by step instructions

  • Peeling is optional. Sweet potato skin has lots of vitamins and nutrients, and peeling takes extra effort, so why bother?
  • Since cut sweet potatoes don’t brown like russet potatoes, you can precut them and refrigerate them until they are ready to air fry. Keep a bag of wedges in the fridge for when you want a quick, nutritious snack.
  • Watch the wedges as they cook to make sure they don’t burn.

FAQ

Why aren’t my wedges crispy?

These will be crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. But they will not be as crisp as deep-fried sweet potato wedges. So if you are expecting a deep-fried taste, you will be disappointed.

The most common reason for lack of crispiness is overcrowding the air fryer basket. The air must be able to circulate to make these crisp on the outside so make sure the wedges are in a single layer. In addition, blot the slices to remove any excess moisture. Soaking can also make the wedges crispier.

Should I soak the sweet potatoes in water before air frying?

Soaking the slices in cold water for 15-30 minutes will make these wedges a little bit crispier. But it isn’t going to make a huge difference.

Soaking helps remove excess starch. But sweet potatoes have a lower level of starch than russet potatoes, so the advantage is negligible.

I also find soaking makes more of a difference in fries or chips, which are thinner. I rarely bother soaking wedges because it is extra time and effort for not much difference in flavor. But it certainly won’t hurt, so if you want the crispiest possible air fryer sweet potato wedges, then soak them in cold water.

Can I make these in the oven?

Yes, put them on a baking sheet and bake them in a preheated 380 degrees oven for 25 to 30 minutes. Flip them over halfway through the cooking time.

Ingredients

  • 1 large or 2 medium-sized sweet potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon Everything but the Bagel Spices or your favorite spices *see notes

Instructions

  • Wash the sweet potatoes. Peeling is optional.
    1 large or 2 medium-sized sweet potatoes
  • Cut them in half lengthwise. Put one of the halves flat on a cutting board and slice into wedges about ¼ inch thick. Repeat with the other half. Pat the sweet potato pieces dry with paper towels.
  • Put the wedges in a medium bowl. Add the oil and the spices and mix everything together.
1 tablespoon olive oil, 1 tablespoon Everything but the Bagel Spices
  • Place the sweet potato wedges in the air fryer basket. You need to cook them in a single layer, so you might have to cook them in 2 to 3 batches.
  • Close the air fryer and cook at 370 ˚F for 10-15 minutes, turning halfway through cooking. The exact cooking time will depend on how thick they are. They are done when they start to look wrinkled with brown edges.
  • Serve with your favorite dipping sauce, like ranch dressing, ketchup, or BBQ sauce.

Notes

Soaking the wedges in cold water for 15-30 minutes is optional. It will reduce the amount of starch in the slices, so they are slightly crispier.
