You can easily use your basket style air fryer to toast bread, bagels, English muffins and more! An air fryer makes it quick and easy to toast all kinds of breads and makes perfect toast every time with minimal cleanup! Add the butter before toasting so it melts in the air fryer and make breakfast easier.
Air fryers come in two basic styles, basket style and oven style. Clearly if you have an oven style air fryer you can toast things like bread and bagels, just like you would in a toaster oven.
But if you are new to air fryers you might be wondering, “Can you toast bread in an air fryer?” The answer is yes, even in a basket style air fryer toasting is quick and easy.
Why Use a Basket Style Air Fryer?
There are advantages and disadvantages to every style of air fryer. Personally I prefer air fryers with a basket because they do a better job at making things really crispy.
I like to use my air fryer for things like sweet potato fries or a blooming onion, and those just don’t get as crisp in the oven style air fryer. But one of the misconceptions about a basket style of air fryer is that it can’t toast things, so you need a separate toaster.
But this isn’t true at all! So in this post I will include specific directions on toasting bread, English muffins and bagels in a basket style air fryer. But first, there are a few things that are important to know about toasting anything in this type of air fryer.
Things can Fly Around in the Air Fryer
And air fryer works by circulating hot air with a powerful fan. This means that very light things can actually be picked up by the air and blown around.
As bread toasts the moisture in the bread is removed, which makes it lighter. So theoretically, if the bread gets light enough, it could start flying around the air fryer.
Now I’ve never had this happen with my air fryer, which is a 5.8 quart Cosori. But air fryers differ in how powerful their fans are and how the air circulates, and it could happen.
So if you are toasting something and you start hearing funny noises like something is blowing around in your basket stop the air fryer. If the bread is blowing around it is definitely toasted enough!
Don’t Use Parchment Paper when Toasting
You can buy parchment paper that is designed to fit into air fryers, with holes already cut out for air circulation. This is nice when you are making something messy or something like cookies that might stick to the basket.
But when you are toasting don’t put parchment paper in the bottom of the basket. If the bread starts flying around the air fryer the parchment paper will too.
While the bread won’t hurt anything the parchment paper can stick to the heating element and catch fire. And there is no need for parchment paper anyway, because toasting isn’t messy.
How to Toast Bread in the Air Fryer
To toast bread put the bread in the air fryer basket so that it doesn’t overlap. I can fit 4 pieces of sandwich sized bread in my 5.8 quart air fryer or 2-3 pieces of heartier bread like rye.
Set the air fryer to 400 degrees F for 3 minutes for thin sandwich style bread or 4 minutes for thicker bread. There is no need to flip the bread over, it will brown on both sides.
When you are done add your favorite toppings, like peanut butter, jelly or avocado.
How to Toast English Muffins in the Air Fryer
English muffins are one of my favorite things to toast for breakfast since they are delicious with egg sandwiches or with butter and jam. Toasting them in the air fryer is quick and easy.
Split the English muffin, then put both halves in the air fryer without them touching or overlapping. Then set the air fryer at 400 degrees F for 4 minutes.
Once they are warm and toasted the butter will melt easily into all the nooks and crannies!
How to Toast Bagels in the Air Fryer
Bagels are another easy type of bread to toast in the air fryer. Because bagels are thicker than bread or English muffins they need to be toasted at a lower temperature. This ensures they don’t brown too quickly, before they are heated through.
Put the bagels in the air fryer with the cut side up, making sure there is space between them. Set the air fryer at 370 degrees F and toast the bagels for 3-4 minutes, until they are golden brown.
If your bagels are frozen reduce the cooking temperature even more. For frozen bagels set the air fryer at 330 degrees F and cook them for 6 minutes.
Spread them with cream cheese and enjoy an easy breakfast.
Handy Air Fryer Toasting Temperature Chart
Here is a quick chart to help you keep the difference times and temperatures straight! This chart is included in the recipe card below, so you can print it out.
|Bread to be Toasted||Temperature||Time|
|sandwich bread||400 °F||3 minutes|
|thicker bread slices (like rye)||400 °F||4 minutes|
|English muffin||400 °F||3 minutes|
|bagel||370 °F||4 minutes|
|frozen bagel||330 °F||6 minutes|
One huge advantage of toasting in a basket air fryer over a conventional toaster is that you can add toppings to the bread without making a mess. This works especially well with butter, which will melt right in as the bread toasts.
Spread a little bit of butter on your bread, English muffin or bagel before you put it in the air fryer basket to toast. Just make sure it is butter side up and toast it as directed above.
The butter will melt and give you a warm and delicious slice of bread, dripping with melted butter. Sprinkle some cinnamon sugar or garlic powder into the warm butter for a yummy treat!
- Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket with bread.
- You don’t need to flip the bread over.
- Stay near the air fryer the first time you toast a new type of bread to make sure it doesn’t get so light it starts flying around the air fryer.
- Use tongs or a spatula to take the bread out since the sides of the air fryer basket will be very hot.
