Apple Harvest

We had fun picking apples from our apple trees last weekend.  My kids think the best way to pick apples is to climb the tree.

Of course that doesn’t work for all of the apples, so we ended up using the ladder to get most of them.  The other thing my kids like is shaking the trees and trying to catch the apples as they fall.  We only use that method for the apples that are too high to get even with the ladder though.  I don’t spray the apples, so they don’t look as good as store bought ones.

But we just peel them and make apple sauce, so it doesn’t matter if the skins don’t look great.  We lost a bunch of apples to apple scab disease this year, so we didn’t get as large a harvest as we have before.  I guess we need to do a good job cleaning up the drops and fallen leaves this year so the disease doesn’t over-winter.  More fall chores, just what we need.

  1. Homemade applesauce–YUM!! We have two apple trees and I didn't do anything with them this year! 🙁 Maybe I can still squeeze it in! 🙂
