Remember those classic banana splits from childhood? This Banana Split Fluff takes all those nostalgic flavors and turns them into something you can make in minutes and serve to a crowd. Perfect for summer gatherings when you’re craving something light and fruity but don’t want to spend hours in the kitchen.

A bowl of ambrosia salad with banana slices, cherries, walnuts, whipped cream, sprinkles, and marshmallows on a table with a whisk and napkin nearby.

I first made this for my daughter’s backyard barbecue last year when I was running seriously behind schedule. What was supposed to be an elaborate trifle turned into this quick fluff dessert – and wouldn’t you know it, everyone loved it! Sometimes, our best kitchen moments come by accident.

Think of it as all your favorite banana split toppings mixed into a creamy, no-bake dessert. The contrast of creamy pudding, juicy fruit, and crunchy toppings hits all the right notes.

If you’re worried about making something “too simple” for your potluck contribution, don’t stress. This dessert consistently disappears first at gatherings. Plus, you can make most of it the night before, which means one less thing to worry about on the day of your event.

The sweet banana base, tart pineapple, and bright cherries come together in a cloud-like mixture that tastes like sunshine in a bowl. Each spoonful delivers the classic banana split experience without scooping individual ice cream servings for a crowd!

Best of all, this recipe takes about 10 minutes of actual work. You’ll spend more time deciding what bowl to serve it in than you will making the dessert itself. Let me show you the simple steps for making it and all my best tips.

Ingredient Notes

For exact amounts needed see the recipe card below

  • Crushed Pineapple: You will use the entire can, juice and all! So don’t drain it.
  • Instant Banana Pudding: Make sure you grab the instant variety, not the cook-and-serve type.
  • Whipped Topping: Remember to thaw it completely in the fridge overnight.
  • Maraschino Cherries
  • Walnuts: You could substitute pecans if that’s what you have on hand.
  • Mini Chocolate Chips
  • Mini Marshmallows
  • Bananas: Choose ripe but firm bananas. If they’re too soft, they’ll get mushy in the fluff.
  • Rainbow Sprinkles
Ingredients on a marble surface: bananas, whipped topping, crushed pineapple, walnuts, instant banana pudding, maraschino cherries, rainbow sprinkles, mini marshmallows, mini chocolate chips.

How to Make Banana Split Fluff

  1. Drain the cherries and pat them dry with a paper towel. Cut them in half.
  2. Pour the entire can of crushed pineapple (juice and all) into a large bowl. Add the banana pudding mix and stir until well combined. It should thicken up quickly.
  3. Once the pudding mix thickens (5 minutes or so), gently fold the thawed whipped topping using a silicone spatula. Don’t stir vigorously. Use a folding motion, bringing the mixture from the bottom up and over.
  4. Add your halved cherries (make sure they’re dry!), chopped walnuts, mini chocolate chips, marshmallows, and sliced bananas. Save a few of each for decorating the fluff. Again, use that gentle folding motion to combine everything evenly.
  5. Sprinkle those colorful rainbow sprinkles over the top. To make it look extra special, add a few extra cherries, banana slices, and chopped walnuts. This is optional, but it makes such a pretty presentation!
  6. This fluff is ready to serve right away, but it also holds up well in the fridge if you need to make it ahead.

Serving Ideas

This Banana Split Fluff is super versatile when it comes to serving! My family absolutely devours this dessert no matter how I present it. Here are some of my favorite ways to serve it:

  • With graham crackers for dipping – this is our go-to option, and it’s always a hit at potlucks.
  • Vanilla wafers make amazing little scoopers, too.
  • Serve it in individual dessert cups topped with extra sprinkles for parties.
  • Use it as a fruit dip with fresh strawberries and apple slices.
  • Pack it in small containers for school lunches.

I’ve also served this at summer BBQs in clear plastic cups with a cherry on top – it looks fancy but takes practically no effort. That’s my kind of entertaining!

How to Store

This fluff will keep it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. The bananas might brown a bit after the first day, but they still taste fine.

If you’re making this ahead for a party, wait to add the banana slices and sprinkles until just before serving. This keeps everything looking fresh and pretty.

Tips & Tricks

Be sure to check out the step by step instructions

  • Drain cherries well and pat thoroughly dry with paper towels. If you don’t, your fluff will turn pink.
  • Cut cherries in half so they are better for mixing and eating
  • For best results, add the banana slices just before serving to prevent browning
  • If making ahead, wait to add the sprinkles until right before serving so they keep their bright colors.
  • I don’t recommend freezing this dessert. The texture of the whipped topping and fruits won’t hold up well after thawing.

Reader Questions

Can I use a sugar-free pudding mix?

Yes! I’ve made this with sugar-free instant banana pudding, which works fine.

Why did my fluff turn pink?

The maraschino cherry juice probably leaked into the mixture if your fluff has a pink tinge. To prevent color bleeding, make sure to pat those cherries really dry before adding them.

What if I can’t find a banana pudding mix?

If banana pudding mix isn’t available, vanilla pudding mix works as a substitute. The banana flavor won’t be as pronounced, but it’ll still be tasty!
