Homemade Banoffee Pie is an Easy Yet Elegant Dessert

Banoffee pie is a slice of dessert bliss! This indulgent British dessert combines the sweetness of bananas, the creaminess of dulce de leche, and whipped cream, all in a buttery graham cracker crust.

I made this banoffee pie last Thanksgiving, and it was a huge success. Everyone expected the usual banana cream pie, but rich, gooey caramel dulce de leche paired with the sweet bananas was a match made in heaven. It completely overshadowed the pumpkin pie!

🥘Ingredient Notes

For exact amounts needed see the recipe card below

  • Graham cracker pie crust: I like to use a store-bought 9-inch graham cracker crust for this recipe! But if you’re feeling ambitious, feel free to make your own homemade crust. Just make sure it’s cooled completely before adding the filling.
  • Dulce de leche: You can usually find cans of dulce de leche in the international foods aisle at your local grocery store. If you can’t track it down, you can make your own by simmering a can of sweetened condensed milk, which I explain below.
  • Bananas
  • Whipped topping
Graham cracker pie crust, bananas, whipped topping, and dulce de leche are arranged on a wooden surface, each labeled with text.

🥣How to Make Banoffee Pie

  1. Start by slicing your bananas into rounds about 1/4-inch thick. Arrange them in a single layer on the bottom of your graham cracker crust. Make sure the entire bottom is covered.
  2. Next, pour the dulce de leche over the banana slices, using a spatula to spread it evenly across the pie. Make sure to get it all the way to the edges of the crust.
  3. Spoon the whipped topping over the dulce de leche layer, creating a generous, even layer that covers the entire pie.
  4. Place your Banoffee Pie in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or until the filling is set and the pie is thoroughly chilled.

🍴Serving Ideas

Now that you’ve created this magnificent Banoffee Pie, it’s time to share it with your loved ones! Here are a few serving ideas to take this dessert to the next level:

  • For an extra touch of decadence, sprinkle the pie with chocolate shavings or drizzle chocolate syrup over the top of the pie just before serving.
  • If you’re a true caramel lover, you can add an extra drizzle of caramel sauce over each slice of pie.
  • For a bit of crunch, sprinkle some chopped nuts over the top of each slice. Toasted pecans, walnuts, or hazelnuts would all be delicious choices.

💭How to Store

Because of the fresh bananas and whipped topping, Banoffee Pie must be stored in the refrigerator. Place the pie in the fridge as soon as it has cooled and you’ve finished adding any toppings. Cover it tightly with plastic wrap or foil.

If you have a few slices left over, you can store them individually in airtight containers in the fridge. Banoffee Pie is best enjoyed within 3-4 days of making it. After that, the bananas can start to brown, and the crust may become soggy.

🥛Making Dulce de Leche from Sweetened Condensed Milk

You can easily make dulce de leche from a can of sweetened condensed milk. Here is how:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Pour the sweetened condensed milk into a baking dish that fits inside a larger pan.
  3. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and set inside the larger pan. Pour boiling water into the pan, and then bake for 1 hour or until the milk is thick and caramelized.

⭐Tips

Be sure to check out the step by step instructions

  • Use ripe bananas for the best flavor and texture. Avoid using bananas that are too green, as they can be hard and lacking in sweetness.
  • Before pouring the dulce de leche over the bananas, stir to ensure it’s smooth and easy to spread. If your dulce de leche seems too thick, you can microwave it for a few seconds to make it more pourable.
  • Chilling the pie thoroughly before serving is essential for getting clean, neat slices. I recommend chilling it for at least 2 hours.
  • Use a sharp knife to get clean, even slices, when cutting your Banoffee Pie. For an extra-neat presentation, wipe the knife with a damp cloth between each slice to prevent the filling from smearing.

📝Reader Questions

Can I make this pie ahead of time?

Yes, you can! In fact, I recommend making this pie a few hours ahead of time to give it plenty of time to chill in the fridge. You can even make it the day before and store it in the fridge overnight. Just be sure to cover it tightly with plastic wrap or foil to prevent it from drying out or absorbing any odd flavors from the fridge.

Can I use homemade dulce de leche?

Absolutely! If you have the time and inclination, homemade dulce de leche can be even more delicious than store-bought.

Can I use whipped cream instead of whipped topping?

Yes, you can use whipped cream instead of whipped topping. To make your own whipped cream, beat 1 cup of heavy whipping cream with 2 tablespoons of sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract until stiff peaks form. Homemade whipped cream will give your pie a lighter, fresher taste.

Can I freeze Banoffee Pie?

I don’t recommend freezing Banoffee Pie, as the texture of the bananas and whipped topping can change when thawed. The crust can also become quite soggy and unappealing. It’s best to make and enjoy this pie fresh.
