Blokus is a fun strategy game that my family loves to play. The concept of the game is very simple. Each player has 21 plastic pieces and takes turn placing them on the board. The goal is to get rid of all your pieces. What makes it tricky is that there are rules about how the pieces can be placed. Your pieces can’t touch each other on the sides, they can only touch diagonally. This limits the placement, and makes the game challenging and fun. The game pieces are transparent plastic shapes made up of different size geometric patterns. In order to do well you have to think a few moves ahead and anticipate ways that your opponent will try to block you. The game is recommended for ages 5 and up, and is fun for everyone. Younger kids do have a harder time thinking ahead and planning the strategy, but everyone improves with practice.
I like the fact that the game is so easy to learn, but is fun to play over and over. Each time you play it is different, so it doesn’t get boring. It also is excellent for teaching strategy and logical thinking. Game play is pretty fast, unless you are playing with someone who agonizes over every move (like my husband.) When I play with the kids the game lasts 20-30 minutes, which is just about the right length of time to keep interest high.
Another thing I like about the game is that it is very well made. The board is molded plastic, and the pieces are high quality. But you really don’t want to lose any pieces, so you have to be careful when playing it. The only drawback to the game is that it is best played with 4 players. There are variations for 2 and 3 players, but they aren’t as fun. When you play with 2 players each one has 2 colors, and the strategy isn’t as complicated. Overall this is one of my family’s favorite games, and it is a perfect game for a family game night.
