I’ve blogged about my dog and my cat, so the only pets left are the fish. The fish are not mine, they belong to my 18 year old daughter, Grace. She has a number of fish tanks, but the fish that seem to cause all the trouble are the dwarf puffer fish.
They look small and harmless don’t they? Well the problems have come from what they eat. My daughter feeds the puffer fish blood worms, which she keeps frozen and thaws as needed. A few weeks ago we realized she was storing the blood worms above the ice maker, and they had leaked. Yes, they leaked INTO the ice maker. How long was this going on? We decided not to think about that, after all some things you are better off not knowing. I did check the blood worm package, and it says “Not for Human Consumption” on it in big letters, which didn’t make me feel any better.
So Grace cleaned and sterilized the ice maker and moved the blood worms. Then last night at 11:30 pm she decided to feed her dwarf puffer fish. Of course everyone else was in bed, because everyone should be in bed at 11:30, unless you are a teenager who likes to sleep until noon. Unfortunately after Grace fed her fish their yummy blood worms she left the freezer door open. Not just a little cracked open, but completely wide open. So when I got up this morning I found dripping water and a freezer full of garbage. So now I have a very clean and very empty freezer, and pile of food to throw away.
The blood worms of course, are fine. I guess freezing and thawing doesn’t hurt them. The only good thing is that it was garbage day today, so at least we didn’t have the food sitting around for long. My advice – don’t keep fish food in the freezer! I found out today it is possible to buy freeze dried blood worms which of course do not need to be frozen or refrigerated, and  Grace will be buying some tomorrow.
