Good Choice Reading and Once Upon a Twilight wanted to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a giveaway blog hop with the theme Books with Love. There are over 70 blogs in the hop, all giving away a book or book related item with a Valentine’s theme. I have the perfect book for this theme, Sealing the Deal: The Love Mentor’s Guide to Lasting Love, by Diana Kirschner.
This book is just being released today, on Valentine’s Day. Dr. Diana Kirschner is a nationally known therapist who worked for over 25 years in couple, individual and family therapy. In this book she gives advice to help deepen any love relationship, and to move from casual to committed.
Now I’ve been happily married for 21 years, so I wasn’t sure how pertinent I’d find the advice in the book. But I thought it had lots of helpful ideas. Some of the advice would be especially useful for my teenage daughters who are just starting out in relationships, if only I can figure out a way to get them to listen to it!
I especially enjoyed the chapter on “Killer Beliefs: How Hidden Thoughts about Love Sabotage your Relationshipâ€. Too many women let love slip away because they expect unrealistic fairy tales. I also like the fact that Kirschner emphasizes that you have to believe in and accept yourself first to find lasting love. She calls this finding your “Diamond Self†and talks quite a bit about obstacles that can prevent this kind of confidence. Some of the other things she covers in the book are resolving conflict, what to do if your partner isn’t ready for commitment and ways to make love last.
