Choose the Right Boxed Brownie Mix

Not all boxed brownie mixes are created equal. Brownie mixes fall into one of these varieties:

  • Fudgy style for dense, rich brownies.
  • Cake-like for lighter texture.
  • Dark chocolate for intense flavor.
  • Triple chocolate for extra indulgence.

When it comes to brownie mixes, price isn’t always an indicator of quality. Mid-range brands like Betty Crocker and Duncan Hines often perform just as well as premium options such as Godiva or Giradelli. Buy a box and bake it; if you aren’t satisfied, try a different brand next time.

Switch Up the Box Brownie Ingredients

A standard brownie mix contains eggs, water, and oil. One of the easiest hacks is to change one or more of these ingredients.

  • Eggs: You can add an extra egg to the batter, which will make the brownies more cake-like. For a vegan option, mix one tablespoon of ground flaxseed with three tablespoons of warm water per egg. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes gel-like.
  • Oil: For a richer flavor, replace the oil with an equal amount of melted butter. Let the melted butter cool for 5 minutes before mixing so it doesn’t cook the eggs.
  • Water: For a gourmet flavor, replace the water with an equal amount of strong-brewed coffee, milk, Irish cream liqueur, or Guinness.

Add Extra Ingredients

The right mix-ins and flavor additions turn basic brownies into bakery-worthy desserts.

Mix-Ins

  • Chopped nuts add a delightful crunch – try walnuts, pecans, or almonds. Start with 1/2 cup and adjust to your taste.
  • Chocolate chips create pockets of melty goodness. Mix in 1/2 cup of semi-sweet, dark, or white chocolate chips just before baking.
  • Crushed pretzels or potato chips bring a salty crunch that balances the sweetness. Add 1/3 cup of crushed pieces to the batter.
  • Try adding 1/2 cup of shredded coconut or toffee bits for a chewy texture.

Flavor Enhancements

  • Add 1 tablespoon of espresso powder to intensify the chocolate flavor without making the brownies taste like coffee.
  • Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract or 1/2 teaspoon of almond extract for depth.
  • A pinch of cinnamon or cayenne pepper creates subtle warmth and complexity.

Swirls and Layers

  • Drop spoonfuls of cream cheese, peanut butter, or Nutella on top and swirl with a knife before baking.
  • Pour half the batter, add crushed Oreos or chopped candy bars, and then cover with the remaining batter to create layers.
  • Make a cheesecake topping by mixing 8oz cream cheese, 1 egg, and 1/4 cup sugar until smooth, then spread on top.

After-Baking Box Brownie Hacks

Once your brownies are baked, you can get creative with toppings.

Toppings

Sprinkle these tasty additions on top of your brownies:

  • Crushed Oreos or candy bars
  • Mini M&Ms or chocolate chips
  • Toasted nuts
  • Sea salt flakes
  • Colorful sprinkles

Frosting

Mix equal parts hot cream and chocolate chips until smooth. Spread a layer of chocolate ganache over your cooled brownies. Let it set for 30 minutes before cutting.

Mix 1 cup of powdered sugar with 2-3 tablespoons of milk for a quick vanilla glaze. Add a drop of peppermint extract for a minty twist.

Brownie Tips

  • Grease any exposed pan edges with butter or cooking spray. Don’t skip this step, even with non-stick pans.
  • Start checking your brownies 5 minutes before the minimum bake time listed on the box. Look for slightly wet crumbs on a toothpick.
  • The edges should start pulling away from the pan sides. Don’t wait until they pull away completely.
  • Let your brownies cool completely for the cleanest cuts. If you can’t wait, expect some tasty but messy servings.
  • When comparing prices, pay attention to box size. Some 18-ounce boxes seem more expensive but provide better value than 13-ounce packages.
  • Warm up the brownies in the microwave for 15-20 seconds if you like extra gooey and delicious.
