Boy Scouting – Fun and Educational

AdvertisementMy son has been involved in Boy Scouts of America for years, first as a Cub Scout and now as a Boy Scout.  Scouting is lots of fun, and is my son’s favorite after school activity.  I don’t always attend the meetings, but I went last week because it was a Court of Honor.  The boys in the troop all received the merit badges and rank advancements that they had earned over the summer.  It was inspiring to see all the activities and projects that the boys had accomplished.  My son was proud to have earned 6 merit badges between meetings and summer camp.

Boy in front of tentRight now the big event the boys are planning is the “Coffee Can Campout”.  They are camping next weekend and are supposed to figure out how to pack everything they will need (except a sleeping bag) in a coffee can.  This is not my idea of a fun weekend, but the Scouts are very excited by it.  My son’s troop does a great job of letting the boys do the planning and organizing.  I am always surprised and pleased to see how the boys step up and take charge when they are given the chance.

I love the fact that Boy Scouts is a multi-aged group.  It really gives my son someone to look up to.  The older boys provide a great example, and help out the younger ones like my son.  Scouting can help relieving the back-to-school tension that can crop up at the beginning of the school year.  The experience gained in Scouting can help instill confidence and increase a child’s comfort level with other students of all ages.

Boy Scouts isn’t just about camping. There is a big focus on citizenship and community service.  They are also focusing on science and technology so the boys can learn about the technology that is shaping our future.  They just introduced a new Robotics merit badge, and my son and his friends are actively trying to organize the troop to complete it.

My son’s goal is to make Eagle Scout, which is a lot of work.  But even if he doesn’t make it  that far, I know he is learning about many critical subjects, and having fun at the same time.

  1. Congrats to your son for setting the goal of becoming an Eagle Scout. It’s a lot of hard work but definitely worth it!!
Our son made Eagle last year. His project was pretty ambitious but he got it done. He made 31 nighstand/storage cubbies for a local special needs camp. A local Tex/Mex restaurant held two fundraisers for him. He met with the manager of the local Lowe’s store and they gave him a generous discount on all of the lumber he purchased and cut it for him. A carpentry teacher at the tech HS came in during school vacation week and helped to sand and assemble them. Each cubbie got at least 3 coats of paint. We bought all the mistinted paint that customers rejected at Lowe’s. Then the cubbies got a creature handpainted on each one. The cubbies came out so beautiful that I was sorry to see them go, but they certainly went to a good home.
He sent thank you notes and photos to everyone who helped him. When it came time for him to look for part time work in the fall as he started college, he submitted an online application to Lowe’s. They called him for an interview as soon as he completed it and he was hired. The HR person later told him that as soon as she saw his name she asked the store manager if they could hire him. He’s been there a year now.
There are several Eagle Scouts in my family. My husband is one, my late father and one of my uncles, and five of my cousins.
