December 9th was National Pastry Day, a perfect holiday to celebrate with family! I think it is fun to do something for these lesser known holidays, especially this time of year. So I decided to surprise my family with a coffee and cinnamon roll celebration this past Sunday.
I headed to Sam’s Club and picked up the special Starbucks Holiday Blend coffee. Coffee goes well with pastries, and I always love trying out the special holiday coffees! Starbucks coffee is one of my favorites, but I rarely actually go to a Starbucks store, since I prefer to make my coffee at home. I have a hard time paying coffee shop prices, especially when high quality coffee is available at retail stores.
Sam’s had a huge endcap display with the Holiday Blend, and it looks like it is popular, since the whole top roll of the display was empty. Then I picked up a few groceries, and headed over to the bakery section to find a perfect pairing for the coffee.
I picked these Artisan Fresh Cinnamon Rolls, which look amazing. A package of six is the perfect size for our family, so I headed home to set up the National Pastry Day celebration.
I brewed a pot of coffee for the adults and poured some milk for the kids.
My family was in the basement watching football (it was Sunday after all), so I surprised them by bringing down a plate of cinnamon rolls and drinks for all of us to enjoy. They were all very appreciative, although our dog was a little annoyed that he was left out of the party!
He tried to sneak in for a taste, but luckily we were too quick for him, and he had to settle for looking longingly at our treats! We had a great time celebrating National Pastry Day, and even if you missed the holiday why not celebrate a few days late! It is easy to get caught up in all the holiday preparation and parties, and rush from commitment to commitment. Surprise the family with a quick treat like this and I am sure there will be big smiles all the way around.
The Holiday Blend paired perfectly with the cinnamon rolls. They have complimentary flavors, and the cinnamon rolls really brought out the cinnamon and nutmeg notes in the coffee. The Holiday Blend coffee has notes of ginger, pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, orange and cloves, so it would go well with many holiday treats. I am going to try pairing it with my favorite pumpkin muffins this weekend!
