Cranberry Feta Pinwheels (Easy Make-Ahead Appetizer)

Cranberry feta pinwheels are creamy white spirals dotted with red cranberries and green herbs, sliced into little rounds that look fancier than they are. This easy appetizer comes together with a handful of ingredients, a tortilla, and about ten minutes of rolling and slicing.

Sliced tortilla pinwheels filled with cream cheese, herbs, and dried cranberries are arranged on a white surface.

They land right between cute “make-ahead holiday appetizer” and “how is this so easy,” which is exactly where I want to be in November and December. The dried cranberries give you that festive pop of red without the mess of cranberry sauce. Set them out alongside the turkey spread for Thanksgiving, then bring them back in December when you need a quick contribution to a cookie swap or a Christmas party.

One recipe covers you for the whole season, which is the kind of math I like. My favorite part is making them ahead on purpose. The rolled logs need a few hours in the fridge before slicing, so build in that chill time.

They also travel well and hold their shape on a platter, so they’re my go-to when I want something that hits the sweet, salty, and tangy notes all at once. I’ve made them for game day parties more than once, because they are so easy and always a hit.

Below, I’ll walk you through the short ingredient list, how to roll the pinwheels so they don’t unravel, and a few easy swaps if you want to change up the flavor. Whether you need a quick appetizer for a party or want something a little fancy for a weeknight snack, these hit the spot.

Ingredient Notes

For exact amounts needed see the recipe card below

  • Cream cheese: Leave it on the counter for about 30 minutes before you plan to use it.
  • Feta cheese: Buy a block and crumble it yourself, or buy it pre-crumbled.
  • Dried cranberries
  • Green onions
  • Flour tortillas: Use large burrito-size tortillas for this recipe. I prefer the soft, fresh tortillas you find in the refrigerated section rather than the shelf-stable ones because they roll more easily without cracking. Make sure they’re at room temperature before you start rolling.
Ingredients on a marble surface: green onions, feta cheese, dried cranberries, cream cheese, flour tortillas, salt, and pepper.

How to Make Cranberry Feta Pinwheels

  1. Dice up 2-3 green onions, using both the white and green parts. Slice them thin so they distribute evenly throughout the filling.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, feta cheese crumbles, dried cranberries, diced green onions, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  3. Lay out one tortilla on a clean work surface and spread about one-fourth of the cheese mixture over the entire surface, going all the way to the edges.
  4. Starting from one end of the tortilla, roll it up as tightly as you can without squishing the filling out the sides.
  5. Wrap each rolled tortilla in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. This chilling time firms up the cream cheese and helps the tortillas hold their shape when you cut them.
  6. When you’re ready to serve, unwrap the tortilla rolls and use a large serrated knife to cut them into 1-inch pieces. You’ll probably end up with some scraggly ends, so snack on them while you’re plating.
  7. Place your pinwheels on a plate or platter cut-side up so everyone can see that pretty spiral of cranberries and cheese.

Serving Ideas

These pinwheels are basically perfect for any party platter. For a holiday gathering, I arrange the pinwheels in a circle on a white platter with some fresh rosemary sprigs tucked in between. The green and red flecks from the cranberries and onions already scream Christmas or Thanksgiving, so you don’t have to do much to make it feel festive.

If I’m setting out a bigger spread, I’ll pair these with other finger foods like:

But you don’t have to save these for the holidays. They are also good for game day, believe it or not. They make a nice change from classic fried game day appetizers.

Put out toothpicks for serving, especially if you’re serving a crowd mingling with drinks in hand. It makes it much easier to grab them and go.

How to Store

Once you’ve rolled the tortillas, wrap them tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate them; they will hold up for a day. I suggest not slicing them until right before serving. The tortillas stay together better as whole rolls.

If you end up with leftovers, wrap the sliced pinwheels tightly and refrigerate them. They’ll keep well for up to 3 days. The tortilla edges might dry out a bit the longer they sit, so I always try to eat these within the first day or two for the best texture. I don’t recommend freezing these.

Tips & Tricks

Be sure to check out the step by step instructions

  • Get your cream cheese actually soft. It is no fun to spend 10 minutes wrestling with a brick-hard block that refuses to mix. Just leave it on the counter for about 30 minutes before you start. If you forget, unwrap it, cut it into smaller cubes, and microwave in 10-second bursts. Just don’t overdo it or you’ll end up with a melted puddle instead of something spreadable.
  • Spread that cream cheese mixture all the way to the tortilla edges, so you get filling in every single bite.
  • The tighter you roll these tortillas, the better they’ll hold together when you slice them. A loose roll means pinwheels that fall apart when you cut them.
  • The 1-hour refrigeration time is what holds everything together, so don’t skip it.
  • A regular chef’s knife will squish the rolls and push all the filling out the sides. Use a serrated knife with a gentle sawing motion rather than pressing down hard.
  • Once you’ve got the basic technique down, these pinwheels are incredibly forgiving. I’ve swapped the cranberries for chopped dried apricots, added a handful of chopped pecans for crunch, or mixed in some fresh herbs like dill or basil if your family doesn’t like feta, goat cheese works well here too.
  • These pinwheels are perfect for prepping ahead. I always make them the night before I actually need them.
