I recently had the chance to review a new young adult novel, Dark Hope: Book One of the Archangel Prophecies by Monica McGurk. This is a paranormal novel that follows the teenage heroine, Hope Carmichael, who has had a troubled past. When Hope was a young child she was kidnapped, and was discovered later sitting in a hotel room with nothing left of her captor but a pile of ash.
As you might expect this event has long lasting implications in Hope’s life. Her father becomes obsessed and over protective, which leads to the break up of his marriage. As the book starts it is ten years after the abduction and Hope is finally able to break away from her father and move in with her mother. She is excited to start a new school and be able to live like a normal teenager.
At school she meets a mysterious and handsome young man, Michael, and the plot starts to get complicated! What is the mysterious tattoo that Hope has on her neck? Why do crows keep appearing? What is the explanation for Michael’s strange mood swings?
The plot moves quickly and the book sucks you in and keeps you reading until the end. The plot strains credulity at times, but it also has some surprises and went in a direction I was not expecting. I liked that there was no love triangle, because that has been way over done in YA books lately!
There are lots of Biblical allusions, as plot points turn on Bible stories, which is unique. Overall the book is a fun, quick read, and I think my teens will enjoy it even more than I did. It left me wanting to read the next two books in the Trilogy! So if you are looking for a new YA series to try out check out Dark Hope: Book One of the Archangel Prophecies.
