Two Dogs are Twice the Fun!

Last month we added a new dog to our family, and it is working out really well! We love having two dogs, especially the kids, who have been asking for another dog for years.

When it was time to pick a dog we took our older dog Dodger to the shelter and brought out dogs for him to meet, so that we were sure the dogs would get along.  He picked Ziggy, and the two of them love to play together.

They play fight with each other, chase each other around, and stay very active. It has been great for Dodger to have a doggie playmate!

Of course along with twice the fun two dogs also means twice the vet trips!  Unfortunately less than three weeks after we got him Ziggy came down with stomach problems, and was suffering from diarrhea and vomiting.  A quick trip to the veterinarian determined that it was nothing serious, but it still required a prescription for Metronidazole, an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections.

I filled the prescription at my vets, but then I learned that you can fill prescriptions for pets at Walgreens!  I had no idea I could get my pet’s medicine at the same place I get my family’s medicine. Doctors and veterinarians commonly prescribe the same medications for people and animals, so Walgreens pharmacists can actually fill human-analogous pet prescriptions at over 8,000 locations nationwide.

And many times medications for pets is cheaper at Walgreens than at your veterinarians office, even though it’s the same medication. This is because the markups are higher and there’s usually a dispensing fee. So I called my local Walgreens, and sure enough the medicine would have been over $10 cheaper at Walgreens!  Right now it doesn’t seem like Ziggy is going to need a refill, but next time I am going to check the prices before I pay a mark up to get medicine at the veterinarian.

In addition you can add your pet right to your Balance Rewards account, just like any other family member. You can order refills of their medication online and manage their needs through the Walgreens Family Prescription Management. I like knowing that if one of  our dogs ever needs regular prescription medication I can manage it online quickly and conveniently and even get refill reminders.  Our dogs are an important part of our family, and that includes getting them the medical care and attention they need!
