Our dog Dodger is getting up in years. He is 10 years old now, and for a big dog that is very old. But he is still happy and active. He loves to spend time with us, and when we are putting up the Christmas tree or wrapping presents he follows our every move.
I think one of the reasons he is still going strong at his old age is that we have always been very careful about his health. It is important to us to make sure that he gets the right food with optimal nutrition, and that he gets lots of exercise to stay fit. Here is a picture from the first day we adopted him from a shelter, about 9 1/2 years ago.
He looks about the same, even though the kids don’t! Now that he is a senior dog we are feeding him Purina Pro Plan® BRIGHT MIND Adult 7+® from PetSmart. This food is specially designed for dogs ages 7 and older. The food was was created out of proprietary research that shows enhanced botanical oils provide an efficient fuel source for the brain in dogs age 7 and older – helping them think more like they did when they were younger. I posted early this year here and here about his transition to the food and how he enjoys it.
Now he has been on the food for a few months, and he still loves it. Mealtime has always been his favorite time of the day! As soon as I start making dinner in the kitchen he starts sitting by his food, and barking every once in a while until we give in and feed him.
The enhanced botanical oils in the food have been shown to promote alertness and mental sharpness, and to help with memory, attention and trainability. The biggest difference we have noticed in Dodger is that he is more tolerant now. We have a younger dog, Ziggy, who loves Dodger, and is constantly bugging him and trying to get him to play. Dodger has been better about putting up with Ziggy, and not just leaving the room and hiding like he used to!
