My family and I love to play board games, and we got a bunch of new ones this holiday season! Hasbro sent me copy of the game Funny or Die to review, and it was a big hit with my family. This is a great party game, and is perfect for a wide variety of ages.
The game is based on the popular comedy video website Funny or Die, and the idea is to match captions with pictures to create the most outrageous and amusing combination.
Game play is pretty easy, every player gets cards, which have pictures on one side and captions on another. Then a die is rolled to determine whether you are matching pictures with captions or vice versa, and how much money the round is worth. More cards are flipped up into the middle, and each player picks the best card from their hand to make a funny combination.
Finally each player votes on their favorite (Funny) or least favorite (Die) and the player whose combination is the most liked wins all the money.
We played this with family with an age range of 14-69, and it was lots of fun. Everyone was laughing at the weird pictures, and either laughing or groaning at the combinations of pictures and captions. Our biggest complaint was that the game was over too quickly, because we kept rolling big numbers on the die and some players ran out of money fast. Next time we are going to limit the pot to lower dollar amounts so we get more rounds in.
There are lots and lots of cards, and so many ways to combine them that this game can be played over and over. The game is recommended for ages 13 and up, and the box warns that some of the images include extreme stunts and mild nudity. I didn’t see anything I objected to, but it definitely an adult game not a kids game.
It is designed for 3-6 players. We played with more than 6 by having teams, and the larger number of players just meant we had to pass the cards around the table so everyone could get a good look at them. So if you are looking for a new party game that will keep a wide age range amused check this one out.
