Garage Sales

Ten to fifteen years ago I loved to go to garage sales.  I would sit down with the newspaper (they are all on craigslist now of course) and plan out a route. I used to design my children’s homeschooling schedule so we had Friday free for most of the spring.  On Fridays we would load up the car with juice and snacks and head for the sales. We mostly looked for toys and books.  I collected old Fisher Price Little People and toys, so that was a huge thing we searched for at the sales.  We were also always on the look out for things that we could re-sell on ebay.  My best garage sale find ever was a Felicity American girl dress that my girls wore for dress up for years.  My mom found a Singer Featherweight sewing machine when she was with us one time, it cost her $10 and was worth at least $500, so that was the all time best money deal I saw.

Now I rarely if ever stop for garage sales.  The sales are filled with things I don’t need anymore, like baby accessories and crib mattresses.  I got tired for selling things on ebay, and I still have a whole box of stuff in the basement I am planning to sell “someday”.  Plus the price of gas right now just makes it hard to justify driving around to the sales, especially when so many of them are geared towards kids much younger than my own.  The kids want things like iPods and cell phones, not nursery monitors or a Fisher Price Play Castle. So what do you think, is it possible to find great things for teens at garage sales?  Should I be looking, or do I just need to wait for grandkids to start visiting garage sales again?
