Goldfish Puffs – Great Teen Snack

This summer my kids are 14, 17 and 20, and we are always on the go. Our favorite summer family activity is to go out in our motor boat.  We can fish, swim, tube, or just relax and read books, but everything is more fun on the water.  One thing about being out in the boat though is that we have to plan ahead and bring food, because like most teens my kids are always hungry!  Water activities like swimming make them get hungry even faster, so it is better to have something on hand to give them than to listen to them complain.  And we don’t have a lot of space on the boat, so the food needs to be something not too messy that everyone will eat.

We normally boat on a small lake near our house.  But this weekend we realized no one was working and the weather forecast was good, so we pulled the boat out of the water and hooked it up to the truck for a road trip to Lake Ontario.

Road Trip with Boat

Lake Ontario is the smallest of the Great Lakes, but for our boat it is huge!  We launched our boat and headed for Oswego, NY, which is a working port on the lake.

Oswego NY

As we pulled into the port we were approached by a Coast Guard vessel, and they boarded us for a full Coast Guard safety inspection, which would never happen on our usual lake.  We had everything we needed and passed, but my two daughters spent the next 30 minutes rhapsodizing about how “buff” and “hot” the Coast Guard crew members were!  I think it was the highlight of the trip for them, but the rest of us were pretty tired of the teen girl gushing!

My 14 year old son was the designated sandwich maker, and he made a big mess with the jelly.  I think next time we need a squeeze bottle of jelly.

Sandwich Making on the Boat

I bought both Cheddar Bacon and Buffalo Wing Puffs, so naturally we had to all sample both kinds to decide which was best.  Although I brought plates and tried to encourage their use the kids just ended up passing the bag around and eating right from the bag.

After lunch it was time for an afternoon nap.

No summer boat trip would be complete without a swim.  Because Lake Ontario is so big it doesn’t warm up that fast in the summer, and the water temperature was in the 60s.  But everyone but me braved it anyway, and went in for a quick 10 minute dip.

I am a wimp, I don’t like cold water!  All in all it was a perfect summer day on the lake.

  1. I have a tween who is a total goldfish junkie. She cannot get enough of them. I don’t think she’d like the BBQ flavour but she loves those Goldfish – the Rainbow ones are a favourite and I recall finding them for the first time ever when we went to a Target in Florida several years ago. We brought those little souvenirs back in our suitcases. Nom. Nom. We are fans. I like to pack them for trips and share them in lunches. Great snack foods for us.
