Sustainable energy, conserving energy and green living are something on many minds right now. There are many things we can do, but sometimes it is overwhelming and hard to decide what to focus on. To help, IEEE recently launched the Green Your World Challenge app on Facebook. The IEEE stands for Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and they call themselves the “world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity.”  My bachelor’s degree is in Electrical Engineering, and I was an officer in my college IEEE chapter when I was in college, so I am very familiar with the organization and the good that they do.
Their recent emphasis on sustainable energy is a great example of how they promote innovation. The Facebook app allows you do one of three things, Create your own challenge, Draw a challenge, or Support a challenge. I looked through the challenges, and I think it is a great way to get practical ideas on what you can do. I pledged support to the “Saving Money and Energy at Home†challenge, which has practical ideas like replacing furnace/ac filters every month, and keeping high grass away from the air conditioning condenser. These are simple things, but it is easy to forget!
Challenges are available in many different areas, including Nature Preservation, Energy Efficiency and Water Reduction.
It is easy to find one that you can support, or maybe create one of your own. So check out the app and spread the word about how you can support sustainable living!
To help promote the initiative IEEE sent me a solar USB charger, and they will send one to one of my readers. This charger is very useful, you simply put it in a sunny spot and then can connect up any USB devices to it to charge. I have been using it to charge my Nook and cell phone, and it works well. It is very small and a handy little device to have around the house.
Enter in the Rafflecopter form below. The giveaway is US only, and will end on August 6th.
