When I host a party I like to make a bunch of different dips to go with the party food. Adding a cheese sauce or fry sauce to a basic food like french fries is a great way to make them better than ordinary.

French fries by themselves are pretty of boring, but french fries with a bunch of different dips are different and interesting. So if you are planning a party make some dipping sauces and let your guests experiment!

What’s in Fry Sauce?

At its most basic fry sauce is a simple combination of ketchup and mayonnaise. Traditionally the sauce uses one part ketchup mixed with 2 parts mayo.

But there are all kinds of variations! You can add spices like garlic or horseradish or cayenne pepper to make it hot. You can add a little bit of sugar to make it sweet. And some people like to add vinegar or pickle juice to make it tangy.

Fry sauce is most popular in Utah and Idaho, but it is enjoyed all over the country. The thing that distinguishes it from basic ketchup is how creamy it is.

Mayochup

In fact it is so popular that Heinz recently came out with a product they call “Mayochup” which is their combination of mayo and ketchup. But is much more fun to make your own and spice it to reflect your family’s preferences.

Ingredients

This recipe for fry sauce includes the basic ketchup and mayonnaise. It adds extra sour cream, which makes it thicker and creamier.

To season the sauce I use yellow mustard combined with Worcestershire sauce, paprika and garlic powder. These flavorings give it a distinctive flavor without being too tangy or spicy hot.

I also add a little bit of sugar to the sauce. My family and I like our fry sauce just a little bit sweet!

How to Make Creamy Fry Sauce

This is a very simple recipe!

1. Mix the Ingredients

Just mix all the ingredients together and stir well. It works best to use a whisk to make sure everything gets well combined.

2. Refrigerate

Then refrigerate the sauce for about an hour. This allows all the flavors to combine and blend together for optimal taste.

3. Serve

Stir the sauce again before serving.

How Long Does it Keep?

Homemade fry sauce will keep, refrigerated for about 2 weeks. After that you will want to toss it and make a new batch. That is why this recipe is for a relatively small batch of sauce, that you can use up in 2 or 3 meals.

I don’t think the sauce would lend itself to freezing. Mayonnaise doesn’t freeze well because it will separate. Even if you stir it back together it will still have a strange consistency.

What to Serve With Fry Sauce

Fry sauce is idea for anything fried. French fries, sweet potato fries, onion rings, tater tots, chicken nuggets, fried catfish – if you can fry it you can dip it in creamy fry sauce.

But is also delicious used as a condiment, not just as a dip. I love to add it to my air fried burgers. It is also good on breakfast foods, like spread on hashbrowns or on top of an omelet. It is very versatile, so don’t limit yourself to dipping fries!

  1. Hi. A little while ago I discovered making my own salad dressing similar to your basic ingredients. That is, I took Russian which I think is mayo and ketchup and added sour cream… and a little water to make it pourable. I can’t believe how much I like it. There is no commercial dressing out there I prefer more. I use more sour cream than mayo but about the same amount of ketchup as mayo. The water is added until it flows but not enough to make it runny. I have also experimented with using cottage cheese instead of sour cream. I can’t even look at store bought salad dressing anymore.
