Well school is in full swing, and my family’s schedule is ridiculously busy! We are supposed to be homeschooling, but this doesn’t mean we are actually home, since my daughter is taking classes at the local community college. Mornings are the worst; we have to be up and out of the house bright and early at least three days a week, and getting everyone up and fed with all their school books ready is a challenge, especially with teenagers who try to stay in bed until the last possible moment. Here are some tips for making mornings easier:
- Build in Margin – I try to allow an extra 10 minutes for unexpected events. It is almost a guarantee that if we are rushed and in a hurry something unexpected that needs to be dealt with will happen. The cat will throw up, a plate gets broken, or my daughter will be able to find only one shoe. So I tell my kids we are leaving 10 minutes before we actually have to, so we have room to breathe. This way we are sometimes early, but we are never late.
- Make a List – I make a list the night before of things we need to bring or do before we leave the house. The first week of our schedule we kept forgetting we had to take the dog out before we left, and we forgot to put the garbage out on garbage day. So now I have a list of all the things we have to do, organized by day of the week. This seems to be working, and the garbage actually went out this morning!
- Allow Time for Breakfast – My teens would be perfectly happy to sleep for an extra 7 minutes and then eat in the car. But it is important that they get fueled up for their busy days, and not gulp something down in a rush. It only takes a few extra minutes for them to sit down at the table and eat a real, filling breakfast, and I insist they take the time! Rushing just results in them eating less healthy items.
