This weekend, while grocery shopping, I decided to buy some vegetables I’d never tried before. We have been in a rut with vegetables this winter, and I am getting tired of a rotation of broccoli, spinach, zucchini, cabbage and winter squash. So I ended up coming home with kohlrabi (on the left above) and chayote squash (on the right). Of course I decided this in the grocery store, so I had no idea what kind of recipes I could make with them until I got home and did some online research. It turns out kohlrabi is frequently used in Indian cooking, and since I love Indian cooking I will use it in a curry. And chayote is frequently served sautéed like zucchini, so I will use it in a side dish this week. Will my kids eat either of these vegetables? Doubtful, but you never know. I also bought cauliflower, which we haven’t had in ages, so we will have some variety this week.
