Minions will be coming out on Blu-Ray/DVD next week, on December 8th. This movie was hugely popular earlier this year, and the release is the perfect time to plan fun themed family movie night. And these Minion Pancakes are the perfect meal for a family movie night!
Minions are adorable, and both kids and adults love them! I am sure Illumination Entertainment’s Minions movie will be a popular holiday present for kids of all ages. Right now you can pre-order the movie, so you have it for your family.
My family and I love to have themed family movie nights, because it is a great way to relax and bond on the weekends. Over Thanksgiving I mentioned that I was planning a Minion movie night with minion shaped pancakes, and my 10 year old nephew heard me and he thought this was the best idea ever, and I should do it right then and not wait for the movie. So I ended up making pancakes for my extended family during Thanksgiving weekend, with lots of help from my nephew.
Minions are a fairly simple design (thank goodness) and therefore are not too hard to recreate with pancake batter. An essential tool for making shaped pancakes is a squeeze bottle for dispensing the batter so that you can create the designs you want.
I made my family’s traditional buttermilk pancake batter, spooned it into a squeeze bottle and started making pancakes. My nephew was very helpful, and critiqued my pancakes for me. He pointed out the ones that were too tall, or too fat, and made sure I knew the correct name of each pancake. He insisted on waiting for the best pancakes to eat – one each of Bob, Stuart and Kevin – but luckily my nieces and my kids were willing to eat the minions he deemed unworthy.
To make the pancakes I made a minion outline out of batter, and added goggles, hair and sometimes a smile. Then I waited about 30 seconds for it to cook and get bubbly around the edges and filled in the design with the batter. The outline portion cooks longer, so it is darker than the middle, giving the design its essential minion look.
The key to the pancakes is getting the griddle heated to the right temperature. If the griddle is too hot the pancake will burn, and if it is too cool the batter will spread out and lose the design. So it takes some trial and error to find the correct heat setting, which will vary based on your stove and pan. I cooked mine on a slightly higher temperature than I would normally use for cooking pancakes. It is easiest to squeeze out a little blob of batter on the griddle to test the temperature. When the blob bubbles on the edges in about 30 seconds you have the right temperature.
We decorated the pancakes with chocolate chips and blueberries, and served them with syrup and fruit. They made a tasty Thanksgiving weekend lunch for the whole family, and now my technique is perfected for next week’s viewing of Minions © 2015 Universal Studios. All rights reserved.
Minions Pancakes
Ingredients
- 1 1/4 cup flour
- 1 Tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- pinch salt
- 1 egg
- 1 1/3 cup buttermilk
- 1 Tablespoon oil
Instructions
- Preheat a griddle on the stove top to medium low heat.
- Mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt together in a big bowl.
- Mix the egg, buttermilk and oil in another bowl, making sure to break up the egg yolk.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until mixed.
- Spoon the batter into a squeeze bottle.
- The griddle needs to be hot enough that a small blob of batter bubbles in about 30 seconds.
- If you have a non-stick griddle don't grease it, if you don't have a non-stick griddle grease it very lightly.
- Quickly draw a minion design with goggles and hair, and wait for the edges of the outline to bubble.
- Once the edges bubble (about 30 seconds), fill the design in with more batter. Be careful not to overfill.
- Flip the pancake after another 45 seconds and cook on the bottom.
- Serve with chocolate chips, blueberries and bananas.
