Plus, it is way more affordable to make your own. My oldest loves plantain chips, but a small bag at the store costs over $5! Since I can buy a plantain for 69¢, making the chips at home is a substantial cost savings.

In this post, I’ll share my tried-and-true recipe for Air Fryer Plantain Chips and some tips and serving ideas to help you make the most of this delicious snack.

🥘Ingredient Notes

For exact amounts needed see the recipe card below

  • Plantains: Ideally, you’ll want to use green plantains, which are firmer and less sweet than their ripe counterparts.
  • Oil
  • Salt
  • Pepper

🥣How to Make Air Fryer Plantain Chips

  1. Start by removing the peel from your plantain. To do this, cut off both ends of the plantain and then make a lengthwise incision down the peel. Be careful not to cut into the fruit’s flesh. Then, use your fingers to remove the peel gently.
  2. Next, use a mandolin slicer to slice the plantain as thinly as possible. You can use a sharp knife if you don’t have a mandolin.
  3. Toss the plantain slices with the oil, salt, and pepper until they’re evenly coated. Use your hands to massage the oil and seasonings into the slices.
  4. Place the plantain slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket, working in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding. Cook the chips at 350 degrees F for 6-7 minutes or until dark yellow, brown on the edges, and crispy. The chips will get a bit more crispy as they cool.
  5. Repeat the process until all your plantain slices are turned into delicious, crispy chips.

🍴Serving Ideas

These crispy, golden-brown plantain chips are perfect for dipping. Here are a few of my favorite dips:

  • Guacamole: Guacamole is perfect for these chips. Mash up some ripe avocados with lime juice, salt, and cilantro, and you’ve got a creamy, tangy dip.
  • Salsa: For something a little spicier, try serving your plantain chips with a fresh salsa. You can go classic with tomatoes, onions, and jalapenos or mix things up with a fruity salsa made from mangoes or pineapples.
  • Hummus: Dip your plantain chips in some creamy hummus for a protein-packed snack. You can use store-bought hummus or whip up a batch using chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, and garlic.

You can also use them to add crunch to a salad or a rice bowl, like this Caribbean Chicken Rice Bowl.

💭How to Store

Store the chips in an airtight container at room temperature. I like using a resealable plastic bag or a container with a tight-fitting lid to keep out moisture.

Plantain chips are best eaten within a few days of making them, but if stored properly, they should stay fresh and crispy for up to a week.

⭐Tips

Be sure to check out the step by step instructions

  • A mandoline slicer will give you consistent, thin chips. Just be sure to use the hand guard or a cut-resistant glove to protect your fingers—those blades are sharp!
  • Don’t overcrowd the air fryer. Work in batches and give each slice plenty of room to breathe. My air fryer takes two batches to make one plantain’s worth of chips.
  • While salt and pepper are classic for a reason, you can get creative with your seasonings. For a sweet and spicy twist, try sprinkling your chips with chili powder, cumin, or even cinnamon sugar.
  • Adjust the cooking time as needed. The time will vary depending on your air fryer and how thin your chips are. Keep an eye on them while cooking, and pull them out when they start turning brown on the edges.

📝Reader Questions

Can I use ripe plantains instead of green ones?

Yes, you can use ripe plantains for this recipe. I’ve done that several times because my grocery store doesn’t always have green ones. Your chips will be sweeter but still delicious.

Can I make these chips without an air fryer?

Absolutely! You can make plantain chips in the oven if you don’t have an air fryer.
Preheat your oven to 400°F, arrange the plantain slices on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and bake for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through.

Can I make these chips oil-free?

While the oil helps the chips crisp up and adds some flavor, you can certainly make these chips oil-free if you prefer. Simply omit the oil and season the plantain slices with salt and pepper (or your favorite seasonings) before air-frying.
