It seems early to be thinking about Prom dresses, but my 17 year old daughter is already thinking and planning! Although my daughter Eleanor is homeschooled she is going to attend the local Senior Dinner Dance as the guest of one of her friends. She went to the Junior Prom last year, and enjoyed getting all dressed up for the special occasion.
For her the chance to wear a fancy dress is a large part of the appeal of Prom. Eleanor loves any chance to wear a dress, makeup and cute shoes. She is already pinning her favorite looks to her Pinterest boards, and here are some of her favorites from JenJenHouse.
While strapless dresses are very popular now, they are not Eleanor’s favorite. The last time she wore a strapless dress she had to use tape on her skin to make sure it stayed up, and she says it was uncomfortable! Luckily one shoulder or halter top dresses are trendy too, and they don’t require taping.
Dresses that are sleek and elegant are our favorites. Too many ruffles or layers of tulle just aren’t her thing. Ruffles like ones on the green dress above are perfect, they add dimension to the dress without adding too much volume. Eleanor doesn’t want a dress that is covered in rhinestones, although subtle sequins or beads are a nice touch.
For Eleanor’s pale coloring blue or pastels are the best choice. Of course once she settles on a dress then she will have to find shoes, decide how to fix her hair and do her makeup.
Last year Eleanor spent so much time planning and dreaming about Prom that the actual event was a bit of a let down! This year she is more focused on having fun, and hanging out with her friends before they all head off to college. It is a fun right of passage for high school seniors, and I am sure it will be a night to remember.
