Everyone has something that motivates and drives them.  Of course my family is a big motivation for me, like most mothers. But now that my children are older I have more time to pursue some things just for me, and I have found that the biggest thing that propels me is simple curiosity and a desire for knowledge.  I enjoy searching for information, learning new things, and challenging myself, even if what I am learning is not something I need to know right now.Last spring I volunteered to help out with the high school chemistry class at my local homeschool co-op.  I knew they were without a teacher, and I did take chemistry in college many years ago. It turned out that no one else was volunteered, so I ended up teaching the entire class.  I am enjoying relearning the science, planning experiments and working with the kids.  I am having so much fun I am researching new chemistry curriculums and ways to make the course better next year.  Who knew chemistry was this interesting?

Old school books with a blackboard and a globeThen a few weeks ago I decided to take an online class to learn to program in Python.  The programming class is all about designing a search engine, and while that is fascinating it is not likely I am going to be creating anything to rival Google anytime soon. But I love the intellectual challenge and the fun of making a program do what I want it to do.  I also enjoy having a better idea of what is going on behind the scenes on the internet, since I spend so much time online.  I don’t really have an extra 6-10 hours a week to spend on this class, but I am doing it anyway, and in fact I recently signed up for a second course which will start when this one ends.

And of course blogging is a constant learning process.  There is always more to learn about SEO, coding, doing graphics, plugins, social media and so much more.  I have an entire list of things I want to learn how to do, such as designing plugins.  One of the things I enjoy most about blogging is the constant variety and the unexpected things you learn.

So learning and knowledge are what motivates and propels me, how about you?

  1. I also believe in life long learning. I’m currently taking a photography course to learn to take better pictures. There’s so much I don’t know!!

  2. For me curiosity is even more important than knowledge. Curiosity is an engine that drives us to innovation. You cannot know something but you should never be indifferent.
