Recycling and thinking about sustainability are important to my family. My oldest daughter is studying conservation biology in college, and she makes sure we are all aware of environmental issues and do our part to recycle.
Have you ever wondered what happens when you drop a bottle into a recycle bin? What do they do with all that plastic? Some of it is turned into REPREVE, a recycled fiber, that is then used to make clothes for brands you know and love, like The North Face, Polartec, Patagonia and many more.
The luckiest plastic bottles get made into a recycled fleece beanie. It takes 6 recycled plastic bottles to make one REPREVE beanie. My oldest insisted the REPREVE beanie we received should be hers!
Sadly though only 29% of plastic PET bottles, the ones with 1 on the bottom, get recycled in the U.S.A. So over two thirds go into landfills, where they will sit for years and years, instead of being turned into something useful. I am surprised the number is so low, because recycling is not something that takes much time or effort!
REPREVE wants to change those dismal statistics, and encourage everyone to recycle. The bottles you recycle are put to good use, and you probably have items made from plastic bottles in your closet right now.
Sometimes it seems like one person doesn’t matter, and throwing one bottle in the garbage can is inconsequential. You aren’t home, your water bottle is empty, and you don’t feel like carrying it anymore. But every bottle does count, and every bottle you recycle is useful.
So when you are making New Years Resolutions this week don’t just focus on the things you want to do to make yourself better! Make a resolution to help the environment, recycle and make the world a better, cleaner place.
