My sixteen year old daughter Eleanor is a huge Miley Cyrus fan. She watched every episode of Hannah Montana multiple times. She owns all her albums, and when her first movie, The Last Song, came out she went to see it in the theaters with her friends for her birthday party. So naturally she was interested in seeing the new movie starring Miley, LOL, which was just released on DVD.
So we planned to get it from Redbox this weekend and have her good friend Christie come over for a sleepover to watch it. Unfortunately my entire family has been sick with a nasty summer cold, so we had to postpone the sleepover and Eleanor had to settle for a sleepover with her other best friend = her older sister Grace!
We decided to reserve the movie online at Redbox, since it was a new release and we have been shut out of the movies we want to watch on other occasions. I hadn’t ever reserved online before, but the process was very easy, and it was nice to know the movie would be waiting for us when we got to the store.
Eleanor and I headed to Walmart to pick up the movie, and some snacks to go with it.
One of the things the movie features is a class trip to Paris by the characters, so we decided to plan French snacks to go with the movie for our own little trip to Paris. French is Eleanor’s favorite subject in school, so she loved this idea. We planned a gourmet meal of Croque Monsieur, which sounds fancy, but is just ham and cheese sandwiches. For dessert Eleanor was torn between crepes and chocolate mousse, and lobbied hard for both, but when forced to choose she opted for crepes. You can see all the details of our shopping trip in my Google Plus album, here.
To make our Croque Monsieur more authentic I made beuchamel sauce to go over it, which was a big hit, and the girls drenched their sandwiches in the sauce.
Eleanor picked sparkling Raspberry Lemonade for a drink, and insisted we serve it in wine glasses, so it looked like French wine.
After we ate we watched the movie, and you can read my full review of the movie on the Couch Critics website #CouchCritics, where it will be posted soon. It was a typical teenage movie, filled with teenage angst, conflict with parents and boy friend troubles.
Then we finished off the evening with a fun make your own crepe extravaganza. My husband and son were nowhere to be found during the chick flick, but they showed up for dessert! The girls used everything we got at the store, along with anything they could find in the pantry to fill the crepes.
And of course the crepes were topped off with lots and lots of whipped cream.
We all had a great time. It was nice to have a fun home activity to do on a weekend when we were all feeling under the weather, and not up to doing much. I think we are going to be making crepes for a sleepover again soon, since they are perfect for creating unique make your own desserts!
