By gently simmering the patties in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and seasonings, you allow the flavors to mix and intensify. The slow cooker keeps the patties tender while the gravy develops a rich, deep flavor.

The smell of this cooking alone will make your mouth water! I like to serve it over a pile of mashed potatoes for a cozy, comforting meal that practically cooks itself.

In this post, I’ll guide you through the steps of creating your own slow cooker Salisbury steak. I’ll also share tips for customizing the recipe to your liking and serving suggestions.

🥘Ingredient Notes

For exact amounts needed see the recipe card below

  • Ground beef: I use a 90/10 or 93/7 blend to keep the dish on the healthier side, but use whatever you have on hand.
  • Bread crumbs: These bind the meat together and add some texture.
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Ketchup
  • Egg
  • Beef broth
  • Ranch dressing mix
  • Brown gravy mix
  • Onion
  • Pepperoncini
  • Butter
Ingredients arranged on a table include ground beef, beef broth, butter, bread crumbs, onion, brown gravy mix, ranch dressing mix, Worcestershire sauce, egg, ketchup, and pepperoncini.

🥣How to Make Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak

  1. Combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce in a medium bowl. Mix everything together until well combined, but try to work the meat evenly, as this can lead to tough steaks.
  2. Form the meat mixture into 4 equal-sized patties, shaping them into ovals to resemble traditional Salisbury steaks. Place the patties in the bottom of your slow cooker.
  3. In a separate small mixing bowl, whisk together the beef broth, ranch dressing mix, and brown gravy mix until smooth. Pour this mixture over the steaks in the slow cooker.
  4. Place a pat of butter on top of each Salisbury steak.
  5. Sprinkle diced onions and sliced pepperoncini over the top of the steaks and sauce. Don’t worry about stirring everything together; the slow cooker will do the work for you!
  6. Place the lid on your slow cooker and cook on low for 6 hours or high for 4 hours.

🍴Serving Ideas

Slow cooker Salisbury steak is a meal you can dress it up or down depending on the occasion or your mood!

For a classic comfort food meal, serve it over a bed of fluffy mashed potatoes or buttered egg noodles to soak up all that delicious sauce, and watch as your loved ones return for seconds (and maybe even thirds!).

Add a side of steamed veggies like carrots, broccoli, or green beans to round out the meal and provide extra nutrients.

💭How to Store

Once cooled, transfer the steaks and sauce to an airtight container. Your leftover Salisbury steaks will keep for up to 3-4 days in the refrigerator, making them perfect for quick lunches or dinners throughout the week.

You can freeze your leftover steaks, too! Just transfer them to a freezer-safe container or zip-top bag, label them with the date and contents, and pop them in the freezer. They’ll keep for up to 2-3 months.

To reheat frozen Salisbury steaks, transfer them to the fridge to thaw overnight, then reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop until heated through. If the sauce seems a little thick, thin it out with a splash of beef broth or water.

⭐Tips

Be sure to check out the step by step instructions

  • Using lean ground beef (90/10 or 93/7) can help prevent your sauce from becoming too greasy. If you use a fattier ground beef, you may want to skim off some excess fat from the surface of the sauce before serving.
  • If you’re sensitive to spice, feel free to reduce the amount of pepperoncini in the recipe or omit them altogether. On the other hand, if you like things hot, you can add more pepperoncini or even a pinch of red pepper flakes to really kick things up a notch.
  • You can switch up the veggie and use mushrooms instead of (or in addition to) pepperoncini.
  • If you prefer a thicker sauce, you can whisk together 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 1 tablespoon of cold water, then stir this slurry into the slow cooker during the last 30 minutes of cooking. This will help the sauce thicken and cling to the steaks.
  • Ground turkey is a great lean protein option you can substitute for ground beef.
