Splatter Painting

One of my goals for homeschooling my son this year is to actually do art regularly, since it is a subject that gets pushed aside and forgotten frequently in my house.  I have lots of art resources I’ve collected over the years and never used.  Right now we are learning about a famous artist and then doing a project that imitates his style.  Last week we covered Diego Rivera, and while his pictures were fascinating, it wasn’t a style my son could imitate very successfully.  This week we learned about Jackson Pollack, and my son was much more enthusiastic about this style of art.

As soon as my older daughters saw us gathering the materials and laying out an old shower curtain on the floor they were enthusiastic as well, and insisted they needed to participate even though it wasn’t part of their school work.  Chemistry and math homework were quickly abandoned for the prospect of messy art.  It was interesting to see how differently the kids approached the project.  My daughters were much more into mixing paint colors, and used masking tape to make shapes on the paper.  My son just threw paint all over!  Here they are in action.

And here are the resulting paintings.
