Dirty bowl in a sinkI love to cook for my family – but I don’t want to spend any more time than necessary in the kitchen. So here are some time saving kitchen tips that help.

1. Clean as you go along – I like to keep a sink of soapy water ready for adding dishes to. It also helps to wipe up the inevitable spills before they become dried on and hard to clean.

2. Plan – Having a menu plan definitely reduces the time I spend in the kitchen trying to decide what to do. It also means that I rarely run out of staples, like flour or eggs. Saving last minute trips to the grocery store is important, especially since the nearest grocery store is 20 minutes away!

3. Make One Pot Meals – I like to make casseroles or stir fries that can be made in one pot. This saves on clean up, and makes getting dinner ready seem easier. If you are making a one pot meal you don’t have to worry about timing, and getting everything done all at once. A slow cooker can be an excellent way to get a whole meal on the table and save time.

4. Get Help – My kids help me in the kitchen all the time. This has the benefit of teaching them cooking, and helping me out. Last weekend my son spent 30 minutes stirring a risotto while I got the rest of dinner ready. It wasn’t the most exciting job in the world for him, but I couldn’t have done it without his help. As the children get older than can do more and more of the cooking – and of the cleaning too.

5. Use Time Saving Products – I am always looking for products that will save me time. I recently tried the Dawn Power Clean dish soap, which is designed to soak dirty pots and pans in only 5 minutes. With this there is no more waiting around for things to soak with a kitchen full of dirty dishes. I put the Dawn Power Clean to the test last week, and after only 5 minutes of soaking I was able to get my pans clean. I like this a lot, because my teens are famous for setting dishes to “soak” and then not actually washing them until the next day! With this they will no longer have an excuse for not completing their chores in a timely manner.

Let me know your kitchen tips for saving time!
