I was provided an all expense paid trip by Disney to attend the premiere of this film. All opinions are my own.
One of the many exciting parts of my recent trip to LA was the chance to interview celebrities, like Tom Hiddleston. He plays Loki in Thor: The Dark World, and if you have seen the movie you know he is amazing in it! Loki is the god of Mischief and Lies, and Hiddleston has lots of fun with the character and makes it one of the most interesting and compelling in the movie!
The other bloggers and I were able to interview Hiddleston just a few hours before the premiere, and despite his busy schedule he was extremely gracious and funny.
Here is what he had to say about the challenge and fun of playing a character like Loki:
Thor is the God of Thunder and Loki is the God of Mischief and his mischief is the thing that I love playing so much. His playfulness, his sense of fun, and the challenge of course is to make him real, and vulnerable and complex.
It was really clear during the interview that Hiddleston has thought a lot about what motivates Loki, and used that to make people root for him even though he is the villain!
What I hope you’ll see is that he’s still vulnerable and that all of his inclination to provoke chaos and sort of start fires and create conflict and enjoy all of that stuff, his delight in disorder is a mask of control. And behind the mask is someone incredibly wounded and lost and “at sea” and conflicted.
One of my favorite parts of the movie is the interplay between Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Hiddleston’s Loki, because it seemed so genuine. They are forced by dire circumstances to work together, despite their distrust for each other. It turns out that was one of Hiddleston’s favorite things about the movie too.
What’s wonderful about this particular film is the need to come together and work as a team, which actually gave Chris Hemsworth and myself amazing opportunities to explore that particular tension between them, that they were two brothers who were brought up as equals and best friends. And they loved each other and they fought and they played and they competed and they were rivals, but ultimately they were best friends. And then the circumstances of their adult lives have pushed them to absolute extremes.
He also says that working with Hemsworth was the best part of making the film:
We became very firm and fast friends. And we’ve had this amazing adventure together. And I think our friendship really infuses the Thor/Loki relationship in this film and that’s probably my greatest pride.
One question asked was about other villains Loki might want to team up with! He had some great answers, and mentioned the Enchantress, Dr. Doom and Sutur. But he also said
Well the thing about getting a group of villains together is they don’t get anything done. Because they’re all acting out of self-interest. “No, I want to take over the world!!” “No, but it’s mine!!” “No, but it,” and then it’s over, it’s finished.
and later,
But I feel like if Loki ever teams up he’s just using people, you know.
Of course we had to ask about rumors of a Loki movie!
People have asked me about it and the idea that anyone, whether it’s one man and his dog wants to see Loki in a solo movie is such a huge compliment. I hear it’s more than one man and his dog, but we’ll have to see. I honestly don’t know what the future of Loki is at this point but it has been a rollercoaster and it’s been more than I have ever expected. So I feel that there’s no point in me having expectations anymore because whatever happens is gonna surpass them so I’ll just ride it out I think, just buckle up and ride.
Even when the interview time was over Hiddleston kept answering questions, because he wanted to get everyone in! He also did some of his imitations for us, and we got to hear Loki played by Sean Connery and Christopher Walken. It was very funny, and emphasized how much talent Hiddleston has! Then he graciously posed for a picture with all of us, before heading off to the movie premiere.
So have you seen the movie yet? Check out this clip that shows some of the interplay between Thor and Loki, and let me know, are you Team Thor or Team Loki?
That is such a fun interview! I love seeing how the actor sees his character in the film and how he develops such character. This movie sounds even better now and I can’t wait to see it!
So nice! Sounds like you had an amazing time!
Amazing. Sounds like you had a blast and OMG, I loooove Loki. Seriously. I have to go and see it, waiting for a date with my Hubs!
Such a sweet and genuine man! He completely converted me over to a #LokiLady 🙂
I love Loki – he’s my favorite comic book villain! The movie was FANTASTIC and I feel Like Joss Whedon couldn’t have chosen anyone better than Tom Hiddleston to portray such a complex character!
