Shortening is something I have always tried to minimize the use of in my baking and cooking. But lets face it, some things just need shortening, like pie crusts, frosting and some cookie recipes. Sure you can substitute butter or margarine, but the consistency won’t be the same, and neither butter or margarine is particularly healthy either. The holiday season is coming up, and I do a lot of baking for the holidays. So I was pleased to get the chance to review Tropical Tradition’s Organic Palm Shortening.
I’ve featured Tropical Traditions organic products on my blog a few times, and this is another great one. Palm shortening is derived from palm oil. In its natural state, palm oil is a mixture of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, with most of the unsaturated fat being (healthier) monounsaturated fat. Palm shortening is palm oil that has some of its unsaturated fats removed, giving it a very firm texture, and high melting point. It is not hydrogenised, and contains no trans fats. It is colorless and odorless, and will not affect the taste of foods. Now you can buy shortening at the grocery store that is trans fat free, but it will usually be hydrogenised and not be organic. So this is a great product for those of us who want to use more healthy organic products in our baking.
It is not as firm as the vegetable oil shortening I’ve bought in stores, but it worked fine in the recipes I tried it in. Since it is apple harvest time around here I used it to make a pie crust for an apple pie.
The crust was delicious and flaky. Apple pie is a favorite of my husband and kids, and they loved this one, and it was gone so fast I barely had time to take a picture. The palm shortening is also excellent for making Buttercream frosting, the other thing I commonly use shortening for.
The giveaway has ended, but you can still visit Tropical Traditions to get some Organic Palm Shortening for your baking.
