Homemade Apple Cider

Fall is the perfect time to make homemade apple cider, full of apples and all the spices of the season! Make this classic beverage at home this year.

INGREDIENTS

apples oranges cloves cinnamon sticks allspice berries whole nutmeg water brown sugar

STEP 1 Wash and cut the apples and oranges. Peel the orange, but there is no need to peel the apples.

STEP 2 Add the fruit to a large saucepan or pressure cooker. Fill it up about halfway. Add the whole spices and water to cover the fruit.

STEP 3 Pressure cook 15 minutes or simmer for 2 hours on low heat on the stove. Or cook in a crockpot for 6 hours on low.

STEP 4 Remove the large spices like cinnamon stick and nutmeg. Then mash the fruit with a potato masher or large spoon.

STEP 5 Strain the cider. I strain it twice, first though a colander to get out the big pieces, then through a wire strainer.

STEP 6 Add brown sugar to taste to sweeten the cider. Add a few tablespoons at a time, stir, and then taste before adding more.

Take delight in this uniquely fall recipe and make some today! It is delicious served warm or chilled. The cider keeps, refrigerated, for about 2 weeks.
